First of all this film has no Spoiler warning. Its a factual film about real events, real people and the events took place 40 years ago. If you really want to watch the film and don’t know anything about the subject, you have had this coming.
Brian Clough is and always will be a legend. So many people now play football or manger or coach because of him. It may not have always been the best way to go about things, but it worked. At the end of the day he just wanted to prove himself and do then best he could, which he saw as leading his club to the top of whichever league or competition they were in.
I know the Clough family didnt give there blessing to the book or the film, which always makes you wonder if its not correct. However as someone who didnt grow up in that footballing era, and has had to watch old episode of Match of the day and the big Match, it helps to see how things were run back then.
There are evidence of the world of money taking over football, that its no longer a club but a business. Boards that didnt agree. Mangers who fell in and out of love with the FA. The media Take over. And remember this is back in the 60s and 70s. imagine if in 40 years time there’s a film about Eddie Howe & Bournemouth and their story, imagine then how a film looking back would portray us now. Will people look at it in a different light?
Michael Sheen is amazing in this film. His relationship with all the character seems spot on and something that i do think Brian would do especially with Timothy Spall’s Peter Taylor, and the Brighton debacle. My mum always says that Brian Clough was her for a fleeting second but didnt make that much of an impact. He puts on a beautiful performance, something that is really hard to do when its a real person as you want to get it right.
The Leeds Team from the 60s and 70s were as dirty as they are in the movie. Maybe thats why my dad secretly like them. You do despise every single person at Leeds by the end of the movie, and do hope they end up getting relegated.
Im not really sure what else i want to say about this film. Im sure Brian, where ever he has gone to, would look at the film and point out some obvious floors and errors in the film, much like he did with the handshake, but overall he would probably see the beauty thats gone into creating this film.
Films are equal in my life to Music and Football. I cant separate the 3 at all, comedy does come 4th by the way. I am always nervous when i watch a film about something that has happened in real life, especially a sports movies. But i am happy to say that this one will last the test of time. Much like Clough himself.
