Spoilers?
Saturday night, just had a curry & some cider after doing a bit more bits to the flat… Art Work & clocks & notice boards are now up, so as there is no Circle tonight lets watch an award season film which is available on Netflix.
This film is actually hard to give spoilers about as its actually just about relationships & how they are tested, so there isnt really any plot details to give away too much, but as its still only 6 weeks old i will try not to go into too much detail with what i can, in case you are all still playing catch up with this too.
There was a point when i applauded when he got his first review from the critic who didnt fully understand the film. This is general has been proper (i know im not a proper critic) critics review of this film. They just dont get it. The point is it calls them out on their bullshit in trying to make stuff politic or race related or over sexualised films. & the fact the film talks about this twice & says that they may sometimes need to take a film at face value says a lot. Thats why they didnt get the film. Thats why it works.
John David Washington & Zendaya have amazing chemistry, they really do. I felt a bit awkward sometimes listening into their arguments & how they interacted, but lets be honest in real life you do sit there & when a couple start to argue, you just want to leave the situation. They do work so well together. A lot of talk just prior to the films release is about there age gap between them, however i dont think this is an issue. I understand the me too movement obviously, but if they are both good enough for the parts & it works well, it is not an issue.
There are a few bits where the camera doesn’t cut away from them & just leaves it on one shot following them around. ITs not even like faked or tricked like 1917 or extraction. Its lovely to see people doing this more often now in movies.
Id like to see the actual film he made in the film. Maybe as the credits rolled we could of had a trailer for the film he had just premiered.
Its amazing they made this film in lockdown & basically spent 5 weeks in a house together in the middle of no where & got it done & made, ready for award season. That need applauding.
This is one of those films that could be a play, especially with the long ended dialogue & monologues that happen in the film, that is a lot to learn & get right especially in the unedited one take shots.
I like bath, that look comfortable, the rest of the house just felt to art deco, but i guess a director is likely to have that in all honesty.
has Mac & Cheese ever been such a huge point in a film before. It made me hungry even tho i had just had dinner.
I like that it was filmed in black & white. Im not sure it actually adds anything other than people saying life & film should be black & white, & therefore that is the point, so therefore its good.
There maybe was one too many arguments in the film, there was not enough moments of just reflection in quiet & peace or even with more music going on.
I like how the end just ended with them looking out onto the distance, not knowing where there relationship goes next. It would of been an easy cop out for one of them to have left or for a happy ever after kind of ending.
In all honesty it is worth a watch & is a brilliant time capsule for what we are all going through right now & how our relationships are being strained in extreme situations. Both of them acted there arses off & created a beautiful film which really makes you think. & also says twice in the film that not all critics get it right.
Therefore watch it yourself, be your own critic of the film, & dont take me words to seriously.
