but was it….
Welcome to the 2020 Cinema Club awards… & that feels really weird to say out loud. We were going to go hard or go home this year & attempt the 100 film cinema club. We were going to be spoiled for choice with films that didnt even make my 32 film hitlist, it was going to be epic…. & then… it stopped dead in its tracks not once but twice & it bloody hurt & still hurts now. I’ve probably got one more cinema trip to do this year & that really hurts (that didnt happen thanks to tier 4 restrictions).
However unlike every other award show in the world, i can still do this via typing. No one has to dress up for it no one has to attend, i can just type & get on with it. So much so that i almost forgot i had awards to hand out, thats how long its been since the cinema.
So lets press on shall we. There wont be 40 plus award this year oh no no no, ive not seen enough to be able to to that. Instead im going to try & hand out some more random ones & then give you some things that you didnt know needed awarding & then give out the gold standards & finally the golden corn for film of the year 2020…. no pandemic is gonna stop that from actually happening. So lets go people.
I have somehow, don’t ask me how, managed to be able to hand out 34 awards (some are a little repetitive but in a year with no content anyone who was good got something).
34) Did i predict the 2020 cinema viewing correctly…. NOOOOOOOOOO
of course i bloody didnt not even Mystic Meg could get this right. I mean when it all started getting a bit weird in feb it was all kinda hmm okay, but once Bond was off first time around we jut went oh god this isnt good. So yeah my Wishlist for the year didnt meet its target at all.
33) The Number of films considered for film of the year…. 2
yep just two of them, okay they have ended up as my favourite 2 films of the year, but lets be honest after reading what i have put for the award above, its not hard to see why this was the case.
32) The First Film I Saw Once Lockdown Began… SKYFALL
Yep we were meant to be at a film quiz a few days after we were put into lockdown & me & my team were all going to watch the film for the month Skyfall, as guess what Bond was meant to be out soon. Instead i watched it with my parents & wrote an online film quiz about it.
31) The Dullest Film of the Year… MILITARY WIVES
As Brits we know the story of the Military Wives, We watched it happen on tv over lots of weeks & watched it all pan out… to add drama for the sake of it at times did nothing for the film & they got rid of Gareth Malone the man who did the entire thing. Therefore it didnt have the emotional gut punch it shouldnt have & i just left the cinema thinking well if thats the feel good film of the year god help us.
30) The Freebies Gift Award… Didnt actually happen???
Unless i am remembering wrong, i didnt get my freebie for the year, i was going to use my free popcorn for october on Bond, but then Bond being cancelled for a second time meant Cineworld shut, I got a Tenet Preview of 15 mins for free, but erm other than that, it must of been starbucks writing my name correctly on my cup once & then Emile the next time. I seriously cant think of another Cinema Free give away.
29) Animal Performance in a film (in honour of the Swan from Hot Fuzz)… The CHARGING COW in DARK WATERS
Yep this one is still going it really is, which is amazing. Again not too many here to go from, but The Cow which is shot after it goes mad in Dark Waters is very scary & freaky. It almost did go to the Swan from Hot Fuzz, or the Rabbit in JoJo Rabbit, but that Cow did scare me half to death so that is gettign the award.
28) Worst TV/DVD/Streaming Film of the Year…. JULIETTE, NAKED
i miss our film quiz nights, my friends wont even let me play a film quiz on zoom anymore, but i dont miss watching some of the really bad films he gives us to view. & Juliette Naked was not good at all. It got to the end of the film & all of my friends looked at me & i went yeah that pretty awful isnt it. Like thats worse than the little mermaid 2 & George of the Jungle & thats saying a lot. It was not good & id like to forget that ive seen it.
27) Animated / Children’s Film of the Year… THE WRONG TROUSERS
bear with me. I did see a few kids films this year at the cinema & streaming & on DVD but not one of them made me smile like the Wrong Trousers did. Its where we learn t love a heist film, & its got one of the best chase scenes in cinema. Its a complete joy & pleasure to watch & if you dont think that is the case then you do need to look at yourself in the mirror. IF anything you smile & laugh at the reveal of the villain.
26) Mis-sold Film of the Year… THE HUNT
Dont tell me this is an adult hunger games, seriously dont, unless it is actually going to be. & also please make at least one character likeable that we can travel with & not kill them in like 3 mins of meeting them. Everyone else in it was so unlikeable or not worth cheering for. It was not an adult hunger games, it can fuck off.
25) Worst Cinema Film of 2020… DOWNHILL!
Yea if you are easily the worst film seen in 2020 at the cinema by quite a way, then you should not proud to have this award. There was about 6 of us in the cinema to see this & i think i giggled once & one other person laughed but we all left the cinema in silence. It was horrific. Like usually id ask you guys to check this to see if i am overreacting but seriously dont. IT IS AWFUL & NOT FUNNY!
24) The Film I need to see in 2021 which was meant to be out in 2020… BLACK WIDOW
Basically i need to take my mama to see this. She falls apart in Endgame when Natasha sacrifices herself for everything, & Florence is in it too. I just cant wait. Its top of my wish list!
23) The Film I need to see in 2021 which wasn’t on my 2020 list… MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 7
What no award for trailers for the year girl, well as most were a waste of time advertising films that we would never see & now have no release date. So im going for a film that i know has just wrapped as someone i know knows someones whos related to someone who has worked on MI7 so bring it on. I will follow up later on as to why this is so high up my Wishlist for next year.
22) Best Song in a Film…. YAYA DING DONG!
Yep Eurovision the movie was the prefect mid lock down release we needed. & Yaya Ding Dong was the madness that we all needed, it got high in the chart due to Scott & Chris constantly playing it too. Its a mad film, but so is actual Eurovision, so thats why this is song of the year (no soundtrack award this year).
21) Cried when i should have award… ONE MINUTE OF YOUR DAY (A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD)
If Tom Hanks ever asks me to pause, i will turn around & say no, as the last time he did it reduced me to tears & i didnt really pay attention to the rest of the film. It hurt, it really hurt, & it was pre-pandemic. This is arriving in the next couple of days here as i type, so i cant wait to fall apart watching it again.
20) Cried when i wasnt supposed to award… SHOE LACES (MARRIAGE STORY)
I know it come after the reading of the letter in the film which made me cry, but then when she ties up his shoes in the following scene, & i saw this liek 30 hours after JoJo, it bloody hurt & ruined me. It really did. I seriously cant look at people doing others shoe laces the same way ( there was a similar moment in Onward).
19) Person i Cheered When They Were Rightly Put In Their Place… MIRANDA HART (EMMA)
i didnt enjoy Emma, & i really dont like Miranda Hart, but there was a moment in the film when Emma put her character in her place & is really mean to her & i laughed out loud in pride & then realised the rest of the cinema was dead silent. Turns out it was just me. But i bloody enjoyed that moment & didnt like the fact the 3 mins later Emma was busy apologising to her. Nah she bloody deserve to be put in her place.
18) Person I wanted to Punch in the Face… for being such a convincing bad guy, but love them anyhow… TAIKA WAITITI
I know, why would i want to punch the man i adore & love… well for being Hitler & making me scared of him & wanting to run away. Stephen Merchant for similar reasons too & Sir Ken. But Nah Taika is bloody frightening as Hitler & its an absolute joy to watch him be kicked out of the window.
Right some repetitive stuff now (which is why there are so many awards this year) So here we go were getting near some biggys
17) Best Actress (Cinema Films Only)… ELLE FANNING
The Roads not Taken is a really hard watch especially as someone who has had a family member with dementia. But the way she cares for her dad & is so desolate that she cant really do anything at all is heart breaking. I’ve been there its horrific & she mirrored everything i used to feel about my grandpa.
16) Best Actor (Cinema Films Only)… SAM ROCKWELL
I think this is becoming something regular now, Sam Rockwell is just so class. He made me cry in JoJo Rabbit as was standard & made me do a complete character flip in Richard Jewell. I may have to say that Sam cant be up for these awards anymore.
15) Best Actor (not in a New Cinema Release)… ADAM DRIVER
Marriage Story, Star Wars, The Dead Dont Die. We really do need to sit up & appreciate how good Adam is in everything. He really is becoming something special. His Oscar will arrive soon.
14) Best Actress (not in a New Cinema Release)… HELEN MIRREN
The Good Liar & Hobbs & Shaw, she steels the show in both. I know shes a national treasure but these films just confirm her versatility. I love that shes in the fast & furious world, its just epic.
Right time for the Proper two of this award that covers all basis….
13) BEST ACTRESS…. SCARLETT JOHANSSON
Marriage Story, JoJo Rabbit, Avengers… Shes just bloody stunning isnt she. Shes a really special & we need to just celebrate her & go yes girl you nail it & show us all how to really do it.
12) BEST ACTOR… BEN MENDELSOHN
I love Ben, you all know that but he really is stunning. Hollywoods bad guy made me cry so so much in Babyteeth. Captain Marvel rematches, Robin Hood, Spiderman, Rogue One, The Dark Knight Rises, Spies in Disguise. I mean i watched Bloodline this year only for Ben & when he died what was the point of watching it. I bloody love him & he is just the best.
11) Didnt Live up to the Hype Award… NEW MUTANTS
I really wanted a horror super hero film & i know it kept being delayed, but i still wanted it to be epic. Nah it fizzled out. It tried to connect to too many things & set it up for more, but we will never get the next part so whats the point. Sorry but you missed the boat here people.
RIGHT HERE WE GO THE BIG 10 THE 10 AWARDS YOU ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT
10) The Inspirational Fuck Me Thats Stunning Moment… THE SONG BEFORE THEY GO OVER THE TOP BY THE TROOPS (1917)
Well if you arent moved by this moment as the camera slowly pans around the men before they go over the top in the forest as they sing & contemplate there imminent demise & sacrifice, then you arent human. Its beautiful & if these brave people didnt sacrifice themselves like that we wouldnt be sitting her today.
9) The Leonardo DiCaprio Award for Perseverance & Hard Work… TOM CRUISE
I know thats random but hear me out. I have never seen any of the mission impossible films before the most recent one, id only ever seen the iconic moments for it or enough to get me through number 6. So we watched them all for 6 saturdays in a row. So Tom Cruise has been a huge part of my lockdown & he deserves an award for still being Ethan Hunt to this day.
8) The Film that hasnt Won any Awards but Deserves a Fucking Award for Being Amazing… BABYTEETH
I know i awarded Ben Best Actor for some of his body of work this year which includes this film, but i genuinely think that this film needs to be seen by lots & lots of people to appreciate it & go yea thats a bloody brilliant film. Its inspiring & heart-breaking & i love every second of it, hence why i sit here & go people need to watch it (Netflix people). Seriously you will thank me at the end of it.
7) Life Time Achievement… Well actually, how about two as i cant split them…. SEAN CONNRY & CHADWICK BOSEMAN
I cant not give it one & not the other. Both have inspired & brought joys to millions in different ways & both have made me smile & have inspired my film viewing over the years. Both i will miss so soo soooooo much going forward, both deaths came as a huge shock. God Bless You Both.
6) I Stole the Show…. TAILS (SONIC THE HEDGEHOG)
An average film that then got going at the end when Sonic started using his moves, & it started being more like the game & then what happens mid credits to make us want to come back for me…. A TAILS CLIP!!!! Like i wasnt up for a Sonic 2 but i am now. Tails was who i played as & i cant wait for them to be in the next one, they really did steal the show.
5) Unsung Hero… MARK RUFFALO
Dark Waters is carried by one man Mark Ruffalo. He portrays the actual guy who is still trying to get justice to this day & its just one hell of a performance & you just sit there going yesssss. Mark Ruffalo is slowly becoming the go to trust worthy guy who is going to deliver you a performance in whatever you watch him in, much like Tom Hanks.
4) TV / Netflix / Streaming Film of the Year Award…. MARRIAGE STORY
Ive watched a lot on line this year but nothing can quite beat this one no matter how hard i tried. The Midnight Sky cam close at the end of the year, but this was such a film & the fact i still think about it now does make me realise just how special it is.
3) DVD Film of the Year Award…. THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION
Shock horror i had never seen this film before, until it was on our quiz list. I just remember it ending & everyone looking at me for my opinion & going yea i can see why that is top of the IMDb 250 list, its stunning. I do wish it had ended about 4 minutes earlier than it did, more drama, but yea its bloody brilliant.
2) Cinema Film of the Year Award… TENET
You all thought it was gonna be Inception didnt you. As much as seeing Inception on the big screen was a life goal of mine & it was amazing, this award does need to go to a new film & what else but Inceptions cousin. The most dramatic big budget blockbuster of the year TENET. Nolan knocks it out of the park once again. You all need to see it twice on as big a screen as possible & just live it first time & then pay attention second time. Its so immersive & i adore it.
& now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for The GOLDEN BUZZER & therefore POPCORN FOR ONE REVIEWS FILM OF THE YEAR AWARD is awarded too…..
JOJO RABBIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It had to be. I spent all of the end of 2019 telling you it was gonna be epic & it was & it changed my life. I know this isnt everyone cuppa tea i completely get it, but the fact that the man on the screen who is scaring me as Hitler is also directing one of the most moving scenes in the last couple of years shows its beauty. It really is one of a kind. Taika is a genius & one of the highlights of my year was watching him pick up all of his awards. It really was a ohhh yeah at last moment. Its a stunning film & i want you all to watch it just so then you can decide if it is your cuppa tea or not.
& that was the 2020 Popcorn For One Film Awards
Thanks for spending about an hour reading peoples. I hope youve found out some very interesting stuff here which might make you think oh thats the film for me im looking at that one, or might put you off.
Remember as much as what i say is right (which it is) Film & opinions are all subjective.
Heres to actually being able to go to the cinema peoples in 2021. I Love you all & i hope you are safe & everything is all okay.
