Spoilers
It’s here a day earlier than it should be on dvd get in. Yes yes yes
Time to watch Free Fire an indie film which I love which is up for my film of the year award. It’s a 1970/80s Irish American Arms deal gone wrong where everyone shoots everyone & you want to know who the bad guy is & who’s actually getting out alive. Thats the basic plot really.
Never ever have I been so rewarded by going to see a film because I hadn’t been for a while & it had someone I fancied in. Never.
It was filmed here, yes here & when i mean here i dont just mean in the uk i mean at hollingbury & shoreham harbour… WTAF! Cillian Murphy was in Brighton for 4 weeks making this film & i didnt know or see him or stalk him oh for fuck sake. it makes the film even better now as i know exactly where those places are. The old evening Argus building got the shit properly kicked out of it.
The world Cillian Murphy using his natural Irish accent is all I need to say really. That’s what made me want to watch the film & he rocked it & worked it. Oh that voice & that man. I love the fact that he’s done his Irish in all his films this year it’s made me very very happy. The tash less so but it was all real & looked lush. He is so good in everything that it goes without saying that his performance in this is par with everything else iv seen him in.
Then there’s Brie Larson who when she filmed this wouldn’t have even been up for an Oscar at this point. She’s brilliant & at no point even though they basically tell you, do I work out that it’s her plan & she’s the double crossing mole. One down point though she turns down Cillian… wtf seriously love why why why. I know we didn’t need a full on romance in a film but at least let her say yes to him please. Every other girl would.
Armie Hammer if im honest still to this day im still not sure which side hes on im really not, but hes brilliant too properly coming out with the one liners & telling everyone else to shut up constantly or they will get shot too. His double act with Sharlto Copley is beautiful whos just more worried about the girl & his suit than anything else (well a phone later on). His armour for his suit is just stunning the cardboard haha.
The rest of the class (including Noah Taylor) were on top form too. You honestly dont know whos bad or good or whos on what side or whats going to happen next. Its stunning acting & well directed.
I do love the fact that all the bad tash’s were all actually grown for the film i love that. None were fake they all grew them, which is brilliant.
It is just a shoot em up for the sake of it but the way it is filmed & the way its staged is brilliant. You always see everyone.
The fire extinguisher & the office blow out are brilliant. But not as good as the van death nearing the end. Thats properly grim but the guy deserved it.
Im going to stop typing now i dont want to ruin it all for you more that i already have. This film is beautifully crafted, really cool really funny really action packed well directed well acted & Brighton’s very own. If thats not a good enough reason to see this film of the year contender, i dont know what is. Go & watch it now people.
