Time for the franchise i think 2024 forgot was happening until like 5 days before the film came out. Yep time for Tom Hardys last outing as our anti hero Venom. Thing are going to get bitey.
Waffle time…Dont worry there is a reason for this
So for the last 4 weeks the Odeon (our other cinema in brighton thats a chain that i used to go to) has had scaffolding around it saying were still open dont worry just respraying the sea protection on the outer walls. Last sunday one of the internal walls was deemed not sage & on the brink of collapse. So they closed the night club, bar & odeon in the complex. So there only multiplex we now have is Cineworld until they can make the building structurally safe (they think they are going to be open in time for Gladiator II by the way).
This therefore meant more people for opening days of films at cineworld. It also means the harbour wall at the marina does a bloody good job.
So i got to the cinema at just about 6pm on opening night. Film “started at 6pm” So i walked in & saw a long queue & was like ahhhh okay they are cleaning up. I’ll go get a coffee. When i joined the queue about 40 people in at about 6:05 we were told it would be a 15min wait while they repair the equipment. WHAT! HOW THE?! I ended up chatting to a family who usually go to the odeon & telling them about the 100 cinema trips i was attempting & they were asking if the showing was cancelled as to what they should watch.
At 6:25 we were let it (remember a 6pm start usually means the film starts at 6:25 with a full advert set). I give cineworld staff their dues. There was a good system to get us in scanning tickets one side, paper tickets the other, someone had the door opening going sorry for the wait.
So we all walked in, to the sold out screening & everyone was sat down. They were showing all of the cineworld style adverts for unlimited & the vouchers & the previews to check the screen was working & at 6:32 they turned the lights down & the pepsi advert came on. Even after all of that a group of teens turned up at 6:45 for the film what the hell.
Sorry about the waffle. But no trailers & a wide range of audience members.
& then the film started… I know this isnt the MCU but damn Hes got a consistently fun trilogy.
Critics always slate the venom films, they always have. But if youve ever laughed or chuckled at the first 2 movies at all, you will do the same with this one too. Because nothing has changed & its still just as weird & fun as the rest.
It is all about Tom Hardy. It really is. I mean when in life is it not about that Man. Hes rather fantastic in lots of respects. But his bickering & bromance with Venom is always the highlight of every film. It really is & here its as good as its ever been. Theres a lot more talking to him than venom action like the last two films. I mean when he does come out its for a reason & its so good.
We do miss some of the original characters from the first two films. I thought they would at least be mentioned that he had seen them or head about Dan & Anne wedding or something, but no. & then to not use Stephen Graham properly was a waste. It really was. They did it in the second film too, but i thought hed have much more of a purpose in this film too. Thats not a spoiler hes in the trailers.
I do love the fact that we have a small recap & then these films do just get going. They really do. Its very good. It knows we are here for venom & madness so it just goes for it.
The new characters were alright, but we had a very forgettable villain, which was a shame. It took a while for that to get going & i didnt care about the villains fate if im honest or all those people in the lap either. Although the whole area 51 thing was a very clever concept & meeting that family along the way (RHYS!) was such a good idea to put things in perspective for Eddie.
Act 3 was a very good long fight. It was intense & you didnt quite know which was it was going to go at one point. There were soem stakes to it, & it really was full on.
Im never going to think of ABBA in the same way again. That had me laughing so so hard.
So the multiverse, that had no real effect on venom other than some of the cast from other mcu projects appearing in this? It was very weird. Why then include Tom in no way home?
Tom vs no Shoes or type of shoes was a good little side part i loved that. It made me laugh a lot.
Eddie & Venom have only been cohabiting for a year, seriously?
I like how it ended did feel very cathartic.
End credit scenes can link to something (bloody how so many credits though one person left went to the toilet & then came back).
Its a good end to a pretty fun & not so serious trilogy. They are all consistently fun & over the top. We arent talking like The batman or god father trilogy for quality but constancy wise, these all deliver & its going to be a bit sad to not get a Tom Hardy Venom film every 3 years now. Its got its own fun unserious place in the super hero genre.
