Time for a saturday advanced preview… i know im crazy, but i think this might be my only way to see this & its tipped as an oscar wildcard, so its time to go watch The Zone of Interest & go oh god at everything on the screen in horror.
I see what your doing cineworld. All the other previews that are coming up were the trailers today hehe, very clever of you indeed. Iron Claw, The weird food one, The colour purple & the silly little letters or whatever the title is. Clever. But please can we stop with the advanced preview advert its doing everyones head in about our rewards please. just stop them.
Id say the screen was half full & i lowered the average age. It was older cineworld goers than me.
& then the film started… This is another example of a film you cant recommend to people but you also know its your duty to recommend it to them
What was so poignant was how they had a “normal life” & were angered by the way certain things actually affected the normal day to day things. You know oh we have a green house & why isnt this happening here & why cant we have that or lets go swim in the river. They just continued as normal. It was horrible. However you look at the world & the chaos it has currently descended into & unfortunately you can see why that was the case.
The bit that made me sick was when she called herself the queen of Auschwitz & was proud of her life there. It was like no no no. & then to see other people coming to visits reactions & not being able to get used to it like her mum. She just couldnt get used to the back ground noise of the screams, the gun shots, the smoke & it was such a brilliant use of sound. Because it kept just reminding you that it was there, which was the point. It was always just about in the background. You should be watching the film but instead theres this huge elephant in the room that no one really talks about unless it effects their work or job directly. ITs just there. Yea it was very unsettling. So Harrowing.
I know i often say subtitled films or films made in other countries are better because its not Matt Damon or Emma Stone in it, but considering i knew no one who was a lead in it, it was so well acted. That being said i did not like the fact that the subtitles were in white & often we were reading them over a gleaming white floor or a light grey path & it was hard to read them. That was a bit of an issue at times.
I didnt understand the girl with the apples. Well i did i knew what she was doing, but it was never explained if she was a daughter of the family or one of the helpers or someone who had escaped. I knew she was trying to be helpful & the story about being desperate was beautiful, but we only saw that twice in the film but it just felt like we needed to show that maybe someone had hope.
There were weird transitions between scenes. I guess that was to make you feel uncomfortabke because they were very odd but still had a point to prove. There was a moment of static which my ears really didnt like at all.
Act 3 was weird. I mean i get it but it felt a little like hang on were just taking someone away from the situation to make it worse or better (it was world war 2 it was always worse). Also some of the people arrogance & pride in points was like oh no please dont do that. I mean i know men want power but some of it was horrific & beyond arrogance. Like worse than uperty people… thats saying a lot. How could he be so proud of what he was about to do to all those people & then call his family & be happy about it.
The end was beautiful but horrible. The whole point of this film was that life continued & the last few shots in the current day, proved that point. It broke my heart so much but it did show that unforatunly life does go on & we are preserving & respeicting but life is still well life.
It is hard to recomend a horrible film, but you have to. Its so important & beautifully shot that it gives you chills & really makes you think about life & why we are here & how we are all just humans at the end of the day. No one deserves that fate.
It will be weird at the oscars when this picks up best international film & yet its made by us.
