Back to Back day trips to the cinema, its just like the good old days in Brighton hehe. Yep today its the turn of Poor things. Its getting a lot of wards hype so im hoping for big bold things here & to be taken on a weird trip for sure.
Cinema was half full, which is bloody good. I am impressed. This is going to be weird & not for the fainthearted, i mean the BBFC warnings before it someone in my screen went urgh really that many warnings… babes its an 18 which is batshit of course theres that many warnings. I would say the majority were millennials though like me.
Im sorry i didnt write down what the trailers where when i went to see this. The only 1 i can remember is all of us strangers because i text my sister & said we need to see this film tell me when you are free.
& then the film started… & it was fucking Batshit crazy but in a good way.
Im going to get the negativity out of the way first. What was that last 15minutes of the film. I mean yes it had to prove that Bella was her own person & not who she was before, but it was like we know this, because she has been unique & incredible & insane for the majority of the movie. We dont need to show a man we have just meet red flags, we know hes going to be a dick to her. Nah we didnt need that.
Also what is with all these films doing the black & white with colour at the moment. Its getting a little bit boring if im honest. Especially as someone on the awards season trail. When Oppenheimer did it in July did everyone else then go quick lets add some black & white to our movie. Im now very much over it. & this one it didnt even end when she went out side or was sexually liberated. It just happened & then suddenly bang colour.
Emma Stone was phenomenally insane as Bella. I’ve not seen a performance so out there in years & yet it was done with so much innocents & passion. She really did embody the character & was so direct & matter of fact & The way she found out about the world & her life & what she enjoyed, it was a remarkable adventure. Her best performance ever. I think she might be a double oscar winner soon.
Ruffalo turns up for all of act 2 & is a pompous wanker, but a sexy pompous wanker. Like i know i have type but damn there were some moments when even though i knew he wasnt the best person for Bella i was sitting there going “i could over look that red flag thats fine” He then did get fucked over, but he was always selfish & did deserve to have a comeuppance for everything that had happened so far. But i want to east custard tarts with him before having enjoyment pleasure as she called it to start with.
Dafoe was so good too, i mean as a millennial i guess its in my dna to adore him. He did create the monsters & was weird & wrong but he did it out of finding the best in people. I felt for him at points & his make up was outstanding. Although some of those experiments were bloody grim.
Some of those costumes were just stunning & jaw dropping along with the hair & make up but it was when they went off around the world & we saw those locations & the cinematography of it all. A world of pure imagination & theatre through a childs eyes, it really was like opening the window. & then also that each place had like a little drawing postcard before it. Stunning. Goosebumps. I liked the fact she spent so long in lisbon we got to see so much of it & also it was a good metaphor as the colour & brightness left her life that by the time shes in Paris & then back in London is back to a few tones & not a rainbow until the end. Immaculately dressed sets.
The story works well with this too. Its not just a film thats whacky & art, it makes you appreciate who naïve we all once are in the world before we are corrupted & that we should see joy in small things. Yes there are horrors in the world to look at (especially at the moment) but we need to appreciate hat we have & the life we live. Thats the main message from the story. It really made you think.
There were red flags from lots of people, but also a lot of green flags too. Some people do have redeeming qualities.
When the film starts it warns you strong sex… lets just say there was more than strong sex in that. Like damn. I mean i know we all like thirsting & having a moment. But there was a woman in my screening at one point that went oh no not this again. But it was not just for the sake of it. IT told the story (although it was hilarious with the dad showing his kids how to have sex in a brothel, i laughed a lot at that).
So except for the random black & white part swap over & the last 10 to 15minutes of the film, this is well worth your time & deserves the accolades its receiving. Its one of a kind a bit like Bella & special in its own way. Some of you will go oh the fuck is this, & some of you will go yep that going to stay in my mind for all the right reasons. I hope like me you are the latter of those two.
