Gah a Friday to Thursday gap between cinema trips felt like a life time it really did. Thanks god we got through it. Is the wait going to be worth it though? That is the question.
Screen 2 was packed & i mean properly packed i had to sit next to people, it was that packed. There was nowhere to sit. I mean good on the film, but Screen 2 doesn’t have that many seats in it.
Trailer wise, we had I Tonya (yesss please seriously cant wait for that), Finding your Feet (im not the target audience for that film at all so nah), The Isle of Dogs (which looked so weird but im really intrigued its a Wes Anderson film so must be a bit good) & then Walk Like A Panther. I am sold completely sold on this film i really really want to see it. It looks hilarious & brilliant & i just want to laugh through it.
Then the film started. Now before we review this, i have previously said this isnt really my kinda film from the trailers i’ve seen. But i know i had to watch it to have any real valid opinion as to whats going to happen over the next 3 weeks. So ive avoided anything else & went in there with a clear mind so i could judge it fairly, like all the rest (well except Dunkirk i am bias to that film though).
Visually it was really clever & beautiful, but other than that… sorry didnt rock my world this one. I really wanted to get into it but i just couldn’t. It felt like it had just been made to tick boxes for award season & that it wasnt a beloved story.
It was 30 minutes to long. I worked out what was going to happen & waited & waited & waited & it still didnt happen & then eventually it did & it was just like ah are we going to get the correct ending. In theory for the film critic yes, but personally nah i wanted it to be something more exceptional than just that.
Im not saying that it was acted badly Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins, Michael Shannon & Octavia Spenser (who will win an oscar by default for this i think) were all really really good, but just seemed a little jolted & stop start.
The most romantic love story you will see in film this year is one of the taglines for this movie. I’ve seen more romance between Kylo & Ray & they arent meant to get together at all. If this is the most romantic film of the year, then the rest are all going to be really really crap.
I didnt get why we needed a communist Russian subplot to the film. I know that automatically gives a film a time & era but it didnt need that, so then it could have been 45 minutes shorter then.
Didnt help that the woman in front of me in the cinema, jumped at anything slightly jumpy then she fell asleep & then woke up for the last 15 minutes & was jumpy again & going ah at anything that happened. Thats not the films fault, thats her being weird.
It was a really clever idea for a film & it desperately did try & pull at the heart strings, but with all the oscar & award hype… this is actually the weakest of the Oscar films i’ve seen so far. It will win some & im glad i’ve seen it, but i wont be watching it again.
