& here we go
film 54 of 54… if you had told me back in January when we were all really depressed it was freezing & cold & nothing was ever going to re open that i would do 54 cinema trips in 2021, i would have laughed in your face & then cried… Yet here we are. My last trip of 2021 & its time to go back to the Matrix, where lets be honest our last 2 years have been a glitch havent they…
I am clearly not the target audience for this film by the looks of it. Im at the 10:40am showing & there are 12 other people in my screening all my age or older, all Male. AHHHHHHHHHH. I mean 4 blokes did look at me like i was mad for being there but i dont care i want to watch the Matrix lads, got a problem with that.
Trailers, Secrets of Dumbledore (ahhhhhhhhhhhh hadnt seen that on the big screen yet), Scream (prob not but it might be my secret cinema in a weeks time) & some weird horror film about a phone (nope) it was weird there only being 3 trailers, but after Dumbledore did i care, nah not really.
& then the film started… So you know when you go out & you have a really nice dinner which has been epic & about an hour later someone offers you a cheese board or like some biscuits & you have it & you go well i enjoyed it but did i really need that…. yeah this Matrix film is the equivalent to a cheese board. Im not sure it was needed but i did still enjoy it & it made me happy. I hope that makes sense.
So if any film is going to be self aware of itself & its meaning, lets be honest, its got to be a Matrix film & it nails that. Some of the flash backs from the original are very clever especially the video use as the red pill is taken. There were a few points where it was a little much however it did work. A good nostalgia feel but not as good as the one spiderman gave me.
Reeves still is brilliant as Neo but there were point where he was like ive got to do this again, oh okay then. I mean he was good but there were point where you could just tell he wasa bit like, im here cos this made me the legend, but maybe i could be doing john wick before hand.
It did take a little while to get going if im honest. I didnt intend in the last year to watch all of the previous films, however i did & i didnt need the recaps as much to reset the world & what was going on. I do understand that others would but it was just a little bit like oh okay then we gonna get onto more Matrix stuff soon please.
Once the Matrix stuff did start, it was good, it was very very good & what you expected. I liked that some were throw backs & showing how far technology has come in the last 20 years. When the first Matrix came out it was ground breaking cinema & now everyone does it, so to see how they have updated it & made it cooler & better was good. It all felt much more seamless & natural now.
Nowhere near enough Neil Patrick Harris or Jonathan Groff. No way. Not happy. Such talents wasted. Both were knocking it out of that park every scene they were in. I loved them both & felt robbed of what i saw of them. Also my theory about NPH wasnt right but was bloody close.
Lots of random expositions said at random points too when we either needed a little & they bombarded us or when we needed a lot & then they just went meh. That felt odd & weirdly timed.
The final chases scene with all the humans in the matrix & agents didnt meet the standards i was expecting from a Matrix finale. I felt a bit like oh okay were doing this to then lead to a bigger showdown & it didnt get to that. So i felt cheated there too.
I like that other characters & people were brought back in the film too. There were some nice surprises there.
Did Warner Brothers take the piss out of themselves? Were they aware of this? I mean good on them for doing it & allowing it to be in there, especially with the years they & HBO have had for streaming & making things for cash & not for the sake of it. So well dont for the Matrix for having the guts for calling them out on it in the film.
It was still an enjoyable film, but did it add anything to the original trilogy, no not really. I didnt really need this to go with the first 3, however i did still like it.
& that was that Cinema Club 2021 is officially closed….ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
