Is it a Bird?
Is it a Plane?
Is it Superman?
Is it James Gunn trying to save cinema?
Probably all of the above. Yep time number 2 of the July big 3. Its time to see a superhero film that has a lot thats holding on to it (why do i feel im going to type that again in 9 days time for the MCU?)
It was rather full for the tuesday, i didnt see it opening day wimbledon semi finals were more important, if im honest. I am amazed how many gen Z are here, but thats good clearly they have been persuaded by it.
Trailers, Wicked, Fantastic 4 (yes im singing it each time i see a bus just so its out of my system) Bad guys, Smashing machine, the ryan gosling hail mary film & then THE ODYSSEY! Someone was talking through the trailer & someone told them loudly to shut up at a quiet moment. Good on them.
& then the film started (after a very fancy bbfc screen very swish)… yea James Gunn knows how to make these films.
I love how when we first see superman hes beaten up & just a mess & then the last shot it him being happy. IT shows even the big & powerful who seem all okay have crap days & that the sun will shine on us again. Superman actually loses quiet a lot in this film he really does. He gets beaten up a lot & is often on the losing side bless him.
The guys who made the lego batman movie called, they would like their film back please. I dont really want to type out what happens but lets just say there are similarity’s to it in act 3 & i was like did the lego film do this better in 2 different ways. We all love a good “phantom zone” though dont we.
You’ve seen me say that Nicholas Hoult is a good actor except for when hes sad or crying, like hes trying to hard to get emotional for it. Maybe he just always needed to be Lex, because i think this might be my favourite performance of his ever (maybe except for the menu) cos damn, he was amazing. I was not expecting him to steal the show from Davids Superman at all, but he did. There was nothing wrong with David oh no he is Superman there is no denying that at all. He was so charismatic every second he was on screen & it was a joy to watch.
Im so glad some of the cameos had been kept quiet for a little while, made their appearances very much a ohh yes nice. But it also didnt treat you like you had to know everything before you want in. This is clearly James film & no one else’s. Im also glad that now as i write this part almost 3 weeks later, its still been kept relatively hushed these appearances which is good.
We didnt need the full on origin story. We’ve seen that happen in every other project linked to superman. It was refreshing for a super hero movie. Yes it mentioned parts of it & there was links but it was very much this is superman just enjoy this fun super hero film. Hes set up as the hero, hes set up as clark, hes got his family, his life & he just gets on with it. No need to fill in anymore than those original 4 paragraphs to lead up to that opening moment, it makes act one full on without bogging it down in here he has arrived, now he meets this person etc etc.
If you dont want a pet krypto, then boo to you, because even i did. Chaos in cute fluffiness. Id kick off if someone stole my dog too. He almost went full John Wick.
The Justice Gang, i liked them. “Dina” has been a busy girl this year hasnt she. Mr Terrific was a highlight of them.
So many people have said this film is to woke… nope you didnt grow up thats your issue. James Gunn is sending a very powerful & clear message in this film for lots of reasons & a lot of the world should look at it & a couple of things going on in the world right now & be like yea we are letting this happen. Why are our world leaders allowing this to happen. We all do wish we have the super powers to stop that & sort out issues on our own but we are often helpless & told off for even suggesting it maybe being told its too political.
The newspaper gang were all so good, but they all had important parts to the film as well. I mean obviously Lois does but still,(that interview in her flat was amazing & tense) but it also shows how newspapers & news reporting & getting stories has changed from when the first comic was written.
There is a mid credit scene & an end credit scene which was funny. I liked that, it proved a point to those “haters”(you know who you are) on this version of DC & says a lot about remaking movies & products today.
I completely forgot about the glasses i loved that.
the way it was styled, & shot & the score, especially when it dropped in the main theme at points, was stunning. It was a feast for all the senses. & for once a scene in the snow didnt make me actually feel frozen which was nice (or is it due to the heat waves at the moment.
Yea this did what i expected it to for sure. A good super hero film, a good life lesson, a good action film, a good hero & villain, good characters including background one. It just all felt right & if this is the way James Gunn is going to go forward with the DC universe, i am more than happy to leap into this.
