Its been a while since we have done one of these. But now i have 3 booked up. Todays, next monday & the one after which is actually a Secret Screaming… mainly because im convinced its The Black Phone 2 which is on my hitlist for the year (if its not i wont go). But tonight it a mystery for sure.
The odeon clues havent helped & Cineworld dont give any out & vue have not even put up a run time, so lets see what weve got shall we.
We had 30 minutes of adverts & then 30 minutes of trailers it was a bit much if im honest. Especially as ive been to a few secret screenings with minimal ones. It was pretty packed out too.
20 people walked out when they saw the trailers for the smashing machine, they clearly thought it was going to be that. The other trailers were for the urchin the new Harris directed film, & another 2 independent films but im so so sorry i cant remember what they were for. But being independent films gave me a good idea as to what the film was going to be.
& then the film started… & after an eternity the BBFC screen said I SWEAR!
Its a film ive been contemplating so seeing this now is good. Also about another 10 people left as the name came up or during the film.
It was really well acted & was done so in a really quiet & calming way so it flowed. The two people who played John did a really good job. I have never met anyone actively who i believe has tourettes but it was so interesting to see how it took a hold of his life & the people around him & how slowly overtime peoples opinions changed & how people have been treated. Okay yes some of it is a little over the top at times to add a little more dramatic effect as its a movie, but still. There are some characters who actually go back & see him later on & are like im sorry for what happened come educate us (which is what happened).
How often do you get to write a letterboxd review which just says Spunk For Milk & have people like it… think this is the only time you can.
I did sit there at one point when we were all laughing at something going hang on we shouldnt be laughing at this. This is a real problem for people. Yes it is funny that the intrusive wrong faults fly out of his mouth but should we laugh at it. I think thats what made the rest of the people in the film who got him seem so relatable, those who were kind, never made him feel less of a person than he was & thats the point. It is nice to see that kindness is a survival skill some times & that there are nice people out there.
The time jumps to start with were fine & then we didnt get any for a while & it was clear it had been more than a few days or weeks. It didnt feel coherent. Im not saying every scene needed in the middle of the screen 1993 but maybe when things changed a lot more put it in the bottom corner or something.
It also added extra drama to the start of act 3 which im not sure we needed, i get it that it had to show the cycle didnt really end but still its was just like really. It also did feel a little long, there were a few points where i thought we were going to end & then we didnt & was like are we still going. I do like the little epilogue from the last couple of years though that was good btu it could have finished 3 times before that moment.
Fireplaces will never be the same.
Swearing at the queen… iconic… but if youve seen the story on the news before you will know he did so im glad that is actually how the film starts.
Its just british independent cinema doing what it does best. Taking an honest & true story & making it so more people can hear about it & think about it. You could see a lot lot worse in the cinema than this when it comes out mid october.
