Time to be a little bit cultured at the cinema i think. Weve done horror & massive blockbusters recently so i think its time to see something that won at Canes… so today we are going to the local cinema to see Perfect Days. I know nothing about this film other than it being Japanese & its win, i know nothing else. I am very intrigued.
The top balcony of my local cinema was half full on a monday night. YEs it was £4 monday but it was still good for a film that hadnt had much press, im impressed or was it just an alternative to Dune 2 still.
I honestly cant remember what the trailers were, but i saw my cinema were putting on all of the batman films on one day so thats very good. They did have trailer for monster which i saw a few weeks ago though.
& then the film started… & for a film where not much happened, it was rather sweet & i think that was the point. Just appreciate life for what you have.
The lead doesnt speak in this film for the first 20minute i believe. Thats amazing. He just got on with his life & went about his day, not moaning. So much so that by the 3rd time he left his house & sighed i sighed with him. IT was such a good way to show that you dont need drama in you life for it to be a story worth telling (yes small amounts of drama happen later but nothing major) but it just goes to show that every day can be a movie & a good day, no matter what your circumstances are. I think he said all of about 250 words for the entire 2hour run time. & most of what he said was at the end of Act 2 or start of 3, because of what happens.
The script was clever too. I mean yes it was subtitled, so there might have been bits i missed or didnt get the full context of as its Japanese, but it was very clever that even the smallest little chats or acknowledgments can make someone day. There was a story where bits were repeated which was like im guessing in Japan that makes sense but here to me it didnt. It was sweet though, but it so could have given him so much more to say but it didnt, it told his story.
The drama with the Niece & his co worker was interesting but it wasnt over the top like so many indi films do. You just sat there going actually yes this would be the kind of drama that would happen here. Could have easily had some shit go seriously wrong for him, but no it didnt & im glad it kept to the real honest story.
His tree & artsy photos… i get that, i love a good tree photo. I loved that, it was a bit odd it was the same tree but what shocked me was that he tore up the photo if he didnt like it. I was like no because someone else might find beauty in that. I know we cant all take the perfect picture every time but that hurt when he tore them up.
Can you really just leave your bike untethered or unchained up in Tokyo? is that seriously a thing? because that freaked me out a lot that they just trusted everyone for the bike to still be there.
Cassettes are making a come back & i love how the soundtrack was all 1970s or 80s music & how it was all english music too. I mean weve all been to those music shops havent we where they want to pay a fortune for something you just casually own. But yes big up to the physical media shout out & the books too.
Playing noughts & crosses in the toilets was sweet & funny i loved that.
I felt extremely calm & relaxed watching it wanting to appreciate the smaller things more often for sure. I can see why this did so well at all the film festivals. For a film where nothing happened it made you feel even more connected to the real world around you. If you just want to watch something simple & calming, this is the film for you for sure.
