I may not have seen this on the friday as i had plans that night, but this is 4 of 4 out of the epic November releases. Its time for Moana 2. Disneys major cash grab of the winter to try get people to not see Wicked. Lets see if this is as good as the original or not.
I saw this on a sunday morning. There was no adult only showing past 6pm any evening & i thought the best one to see would be one filled with the target audience of families who all are binging it on disney plus constantly. I felt a bit weird being the only odd 1 there but it was okay.
Trailers, sonic, some weird cat dog thing, we live in time, Mine crat & there was 1 more damn it what was it. Ahhh how to train your dragon that was it. It looks cool.
& then the film started… sorry but it was Moanmeh not Moanyea (Im proud of that).
I was not expecting a Kids film(especially from disney) to mention fan fiction. Like what the hell. Me & 3 other adults laughed at that, but other than that moment, there was no mass laughter in the cinema at all. No little chuckles or collective giggles. This is meant to be the Moana sequel & your all just sitting there quietly. What the hell is going on here. This should be fun. Even the kids joke that i tutted at werent met with like children laughs. & i went with the target audience.
The script did lack some of the original Taika charm & the songs definitely lacked no Lin Manuel Miranda. There was no grabbing itself song. I mean even the rocks song was meh. It was like they suddenly went ahh we need a wrap for the rock, lets throw one in. None of them hit home at all. None of these will be disney classics for years to come.
Tudyk was the best part, obviously. Bloody love that chicken he can do no wrong. Rose Matafeo was a brilliant addition to the cast too, but all of the new characters yes they learnt their lessons but that was all they were a lesson & yes most of the first film is Moana & Maui, but we spend a long time on the island to start, no one from the first film goes further.
The steaks slightly matter in this film, but this is once again a Disney film with no true villain. I didnt care what happened when we got to the final show down. We had a villain song that was lack lust, but were they really the villain & then to tease a mid credit scene with the thing behind it but with no indication when we can expect a 3rd film, is very much a oh come on disney, we aint got time for this, unless its already in preproduction, we aint bothered. It all just felt rushed.
Moana is a good character & so are the coconuts but other than that, you dont really want to invest in anyone, other that Maui. But im also sure you only invest in him for the rock & nothing else.
I have since learnt this was ordinally going to be a 6 episode tv show & then put into a film, because dinsey needed the cash. Yea i can now so see that now. It explains the weird pacing & stuff being thrown in at odd points.
The shooting star & the ocean are always very well done in these film, so that was good.
Yea this wasnt your best work Disney. You thought this was going to be a crowning achievement. I wouldnt be surprised if people forget this even exists come this point next year (unless you have a 5 year old). Yea this didnt do it for me… this was the dud of the 4. i knew we would get one in november…
