Welcome to 7:30 on July 23rd. By 7:30 on July 24th i will have seen 2 Pedro Pascal films in the cinema in a 24h period. Yea i know ahhhhhhhhhh. & here with Materialists, im bloody lucky, its an advanced preview. America got this like 6 weeks ago we dont get it for another month but cineworld are showing it now. So i am heading for my fix to let every british Pedro & Chris girl if this is worth their time or not.
Its packed. Like ive not seen an advanced preview this packed in a while. So much so that someone through i was in their chair…erm mate i was the first person to book my seat for this film, no im in the right place. I even had a chat to a few people as the credits rolled which was nice, but as we left their bus arrived so they ran off & i didnt get their names darn it.
Trailers, Eddington (someone actually went ahh more Pedro then), Life of chuck (our next advance film) Weapons (looks so good) The Smashing Machine & some little film called Fantastic 4… not sure if yovue heard of it…
& then the film started… this isnt a rom com but damn its romantic.
Lets get our man out of the way to start with so then i can talk about the rest of it. Harry really is a unicorn, & is so stylish & sexy & clearly adores her. & our man shows off his charm & how to wear a suit well & has a couple of moments where we wish we were sharing the scene with him. Hes also vulnerable at a couple of points too. Basically Pedro, if people werent falling for you before this film then they are now.
Right now for the rest of it…
One of the first things i noticed early on was the very clear directing styles, keeping one person in dark & light with clear lines separating them & then also a distance between certain characters, that was so clever, it just worked to show how certain people were viewed in this film & made you feel sorry for them. The use of the space or lack of it at points was so good. Clearly barriers that needed breaking.
This is not a Rom Com as i said above, i think i laughed maybe 5 times (which was more than anyone else in my advanced preview) but its just a romance film. However there is also a subject matter that has triggered some people. There is a warning when the bbfc card comes up about it & you never actually see it but its still a trigger for some people for sure. ITs not a main story line that actually effects the main 3 but still its worth reading those warnings before you sit down. Dont expect to be laughing like you do at Notting Hill.
Now i understand why with one of the leading men Dakota is not meant to have the best chemistry, however you have Pedro Pascal & Chris Evans. they are both the hottest & sexiest & most charismatic guys in hollywood. Babes, make it look like you are in lvoe with at least one of them, please. at least do it with the one your meant to end up with. But no, nothing. & her deliver in some of the more based on her moments of acting was just wooden. I have now seen her in enough films in all sorts of genres to know she is not a good actress. She didnt even wrap her arms or legs around Pedro at one point, babes, you have everyone on the planets dream moment right there, bloody do it. She is the films weak link & shes the lead. Its her name at the top of the poster. Its her story.
She actually had a lien when she was talking about being an actor in the past, & she goes “i wasnt good at acting” I should not have laughed so hard at that, but i did. The guy next to me was like eh?
Also there are a lot of uperty people living in all sort of weird places in new york or people who are bigger or more entitled than they should be & you know how i feel about these kind of people.
Why didnt she just get a hotel at one point? Or call the airbnb thing & go nope, change of mind refund the money. what logical reason would you have for actually doing what she did, just showed how out of touch that character was with the real world too.
There were a few scene that lingered on a little bit to long & made it all slow down, i now know this is Celines style, but still it was like hang on maybe we dont need the extra 5 seconds here, as a film person ive got the point.
Pedro at one point says his eyes are his best feature, yes babes we get you, we know they are.
Chris Evans was giving it all at one point & getting nothing back. Its not quiet his performance in gifted, because thats spectacular but its close at times. He i delivering the line & being the perfect & imperfect man at points.
The opening of the film was a very interesting way to start a movie, but does make sense. & also the credits at the end, they are rather sweet.
The actual story is a good sweet romance, which build trust & talks us through the messy world of what is & isnt love in the modern world now & how we all are built & what we expect to get from it.
This was a beautiful clever romantic film for sure, it just needed a better female lead than her, im sorry it does. I probably will be going back for a rewatch when it comes out for the “plot” (Pedro & Chris being dreamy). But its worth all your time peoples, it has heart & soul, just not from her.
