i remember seeing the original at a friends house maybe aged 9, but i have not seen the original or any of the follow ups since, but ive seen the trailer & i’ve looked up some lore, & i think im going to be good to go to watch the new Karate Kid film, i mean its a simple set up what could go wrong.
I saw the 6pm showing of this on a thursday during half term. I was expecting a few more people in my cinema than were there, but no. Maybe 10 families, that was about it & me as a one sitting on my own at the back, hmmmmmmmmm. Well maybe everyone went to see it during the day.
Trailers, Elio (disney market this please) Jurassic Park (yes) Fantastic 4(sung in that way) Smurfs(nah) & how to train your dragon(still looks epic). All kid friendly.
& then the film started… well turns out it could go a bit wrong.
Okay so the actual Karate, that was good when we got to it. It was well choreographed & felt like every punch & kick was well place & thought out. Also every fight needs a montage (team america says so) & im so glad we technically got 2 here, we got one with the dad & then his on the roof. So thats double points.
Who was in charge of picking the soundtrack for this film? seriously? fire them. Not one of them went with any moment in the film. It was like they went through TIKTOK over the last 18 months & put all the trends into this one film for the music. Mystical Magical doesnt belong in this movie. However there were so many quick scenes & moments that flashed by that it wouldnt surprise me if in 8 weeks this is all clipped up to be shown in 70 1minute clips on tiktok as a film. Weve all seen them on our feeds, it was like this film was just made to flood your feed.
This was 2 films made into one. The first half of the film was about finding your place in the world & the people in it. Like he cared about that family & did all he could to help them because he liked the girl. & then the second half was a karate film, filled with nostalgia & the main fight. It only tired to merge maybe 3 times & none really worked.
The kid was good in it, considering but he was the youngest person in the film other than people at that karate school he left, which when Jackie left for so long who was training them? huh? but all the other people he thought & even the “love” interest who he was trying to have chemistry with but she wasnt was at least 20. HE also cared more about her dad then anyone else in the film at all.
We had to flash back to places at so many points, even though we only saw that moment like 5minutes ago. Do they really think we have the attention span of a goldfish? is that what we are now. It got so irritating.
It wasnt as funny as it should have been all the jokes were even so dated or fell flat it was like what is going on here, it also almost paused at times for people to giggle but it was met with silence.
The roof top was cool. I liked that, & i liked his tutor i was more invested in him than anyone else in the film especially when he tried to get everyone to get along, justice for that guy.
Do we really need a special signature move which could save the world? Hes not captain america or another super hero, just no nope.
Maybe im not the target audience for this, im not a fan of the original or its follow ups & im not a teenager who thinks this is cool. But i left the cinema going urgh that was a little bit of a waste of my evening. Its not for me at all sorry peoples.
