If you had told me a year ago that i would be going to see a live Q&A film where the creator & film star were selling the merch before the movie which is a silent film about Beavers, id have laughed in your face. But here i am, monday night at 7:45 at my local independent cinema to watch Hundreds of Beavers, & the carnage that follows it.
If you want to see some of the carnage that went down click here for all the videos & shenanigans from the night, because what im about to describe you all going to go oh fuck no, that would never happen. Let me tell you every word of this is true.
So i walk upstairs & the person scanning the tickets is someone in a beaver costume. Turns out they only had 6 beaver costumes for the entire film. I know what the fuck. Then in i walked & there was the star of the film, SPEAKING! Yea he actually has a voice. I wish i had brought my Blu ray with me for him to sign, but i didnt but i got 2 pin badges which when people now come to my flat they see & go the fuck are those & then i get to explain it…
It was full inside the studio screen. I was a bit shocked it was only in the little studio & they didnt put it on the big screen down stage with the huge stage which guess what performances are meant to happen on but you know. All mixes of ages & a pretty even split between those who had seen it & those who hasnt.
As the trailers & adverts were going on, someone dressed up as one of the dogs from the film was on the stage reacting to it all. Every now & then the beaver would appear & he would have to chase it off.
Before the film started, they came on stage & talked about themselves & the self funding of the film & did a brief synopsis of the film before then leaving. They even called out a few people in the very front who were in fancy dress, they said they probably spent more money on the costumes then they did for the film.
The film then did start & it was as batshit as it always was. It was so nice hearing people laugh at a film for the first time. I enjoyed that. You could clearly hear the difference between the laughs of those that had seen it before & those that hadnt. Like theres some random space bits half way through which all the loyal were cackling at, knowing what was going to happen.
The Q&A afterwards took so long after the film that the staff were like we need to leave please, it was almost as long as the film, but we were all loving it. I now have a new love for act 3 in them trying to do the most bonkers thing in the world that their budget allowed them & they were like can we do that & They were just like ahhh okay then so they did it.
I love the story about how its been a decade in the making & how everyone they knew helped film or make something or was in a costume at some point. It really was a call in of favours & love & passion & you can so see it.
I love that they had the horse just stand on stage at the end & how the lead beat up the beaver at last &he just laid on the stage for 20mins. It was brilliant.
Seriously i need you all to search this out. If they are coming to you on tour please go, because this isnt a film you can really explain at all (& im dreading but also going to be loving doing the dvd review soon) Its a true passion project & a labour of love. Independent cinema for the win peoples, go watch it.
