Its time for the film im going to be the most indecisive about this year. Yep its time for the F1 movie. If i ever stand a chance of finding a date, its going to be at this film. Both my loves movies & F1 whats not to enjoys.
Well actually how about the two guys who looked in their 30s who walked past me during the adverts & went erm bloody women bet shes only here for brad pitt. I heard it, & i wanted to ask them if they knew about a red shouldered black bird, just to see how big an f1 fan they were. Twats. IT was mainly blokes im not going to lie. No one turned up in a mclaren top i was gutted by that. & id say it was 70% full.
Trailers, F4, Superman, Jurassic Park, Naked Gun & Smashing Machine (will the rock get awards glory for playing himself who knows) we also had so many F1 or F1 based adverts or to do wit apple that it all just dragged on.
& then the film started… Im going to review this first as a film fan & then second as an f1 fan…
As A film fan… WOW!
The score, damn Hans was on fire. Like we arent quiet going Gladiator or Inception or the Lion King, but its the tier below. It was goosebumps & chills. Im not sure we need an actual soundtrack & it would have been nice for the chain to have been included but it was rather special.
The filming on the cars, wow. Clearly the top gun maverick technology was used on this to make it feel special. But the closeness to the walls & the driving & the sound of the cars (if i didnt know) was really full on.
I get why the end is edge of your seat & then not, but weve been so on edge for all of that act that it was just like ooooh come on please let us go let us do this.
Javier Bardem gives the best perfromance in this by a long way. He was more than convincing as the race team owner & did such a good job. Also you could spot who was going to be the villain a mile off & it wasnt going to be christian horner (who has now been sacked which means we arent the bad guys anymore).
To actually be able to film this in the actual f1 world & do it at the races is so clever & good. I know it was just during practice & testing but still its very clever that they got so much in there, & that they had drivers at points. I love that Carlos & Lando made sure even in the quiet moments of the film that they ended up in the movie. Good on you lads. Thats my boys.
Brad Pitt in a laundrette… have i time travelled back to 1994?
So there were some plot points that were never explained, what happened to his dad, the watch, why no trophy, why only bring up all his ticks in the final race, why he never looked at the card & why didnt we see it. A normal film id call this up on.
Now for the F1 fan in me… URGH! If this becomes a rant im sorry.
Lets do the good thing first… ROSCOE!!!!!!!!!!! Yes to Roscoe getting screen time & a credit, hes a movie star & needs a letterboxd page right now.
Also Max telling someone off for being a twat & the Gunter cameo, that was fun.
Brad Pitt is to old to be an F1 driver. I was expecting them to make him late 40s could maybe get away with it then, but know they had him racing with the legends in the 90s. He was late 50s at best. Also he was too much of a big name for the film. Im sorry he was. I get hes going to bring people in but it would have been more convincing with someone like Oscar Isaac whos mid 40s in the lead, much more believable.
Not every F1 race has all those crashes. They arent all exciting. You all wake up at 6am for China & try to stay awake, or watch Miami. Also all the crashes were pure chaos & like the worst crashes in ages. A cash in on some of the more horrible things weve sat there & watched over the years. Also the kid was back in the car in weeks, Roman didnt when he was hte man on fire.
With some of the ways the team did stuff, they would be seeing black flags & penalty points, & licences disqualifications, where were the stewards to sort all that out?
The women in the film were handled so poorly, mistakes or love interests. Nope i aint down for that. I then love that sky then spent the next week on the grid walk talking to all the actual women in f1 to prove theye arent actually like the film. Also no one would throw everything away like that.
Can you introduce me to Carlos Sainz?! Okay i fancy the socks off the man but if i was sat next to any f1 driver that would not be my opening line, id ask them about their favourite track or about the last race. Id even do that with lance fricken stroll & thats saying a lot.
The calendar order, wrong.
The podium scene wrong. Also poor charles. He had just lost the contractors & they made him get on the podium to film that. I also love that George Russell is so in awe of someone in that scene its so cool.
The whole team building thing, they would already be running the track as a team. No way would that be something they decided to do. Its a huge in garage competition in f1.
Now i would say a back marker getting near the podium is not going to happen, but recently Hulkenburg did it(epic day) so maybe that wasnt too far away from truth. But that now wont happen for ages, amybe even years again. Its a rare occurrence.
There was a lack of qualifying, sprints & practice & bollocks to that testing session too. Also how many different team bases did they use for their HQ i think at least 3, maybe 4.
When drive to survive was mentioned i tutted, but honestly it was the right idiot who was only going to know f1 from that.
Abu Dhabi being the act 3 & the recent history of what went down there was very much a ooooh your really going to do that.
Im going to stop moaning there. oooh & it felt bloody long, sorry im done now.
If you are a film nerd & know the basics of f1 & are after a blockbuster you will eat this up. But if you are a proper f1 fan it will irritate you so much. I get that its hollywood & needs a story but they could have done a better one, to make it more believable. Im my own worst enemy for this on.
