Double Bubble Back to Backs again. I’ve got films to catch up on people & with Oscar Season its going to get even more mahhhhhhhh soon so lets get viewing & typing shall we. Todays first offering was Ad Astra the new emotional space film, which is supposed to be really gripping so lets see if it is shall we.
Screen 1 was a little spras if im honest okay the film has now been out for nearly 2 weeks but i was expecting a few more people in there. Someone was in my seat though, not happy about that.
Trailers & i finally saw the full long trailer for Joker. At last. Its taken forever & ever to see this in the cinema & i see it the week it comes out. Also there was Gemini Man, the new Ken Loach delivery film, Judy & there was one more too what was it ( it wasnt JOJO) ah it was Le Mans 66 that was it i knew it was something i was into. Yep im up for that, look fun.
& then the film started… & it wasnt what i expected if im honest, thats not to say it was a bad film, it just was a bit of a oh okay so we are doing this then.
Interstellar (sorry Nolan bias here you all knew that though) is deemed the most emotional space film of all time which is gut wrenching & makes you cry & this film had been touted as being up there with this for the emotional pain it brings. I didnt even well up once no tears came from this girl who loves to cry at a film & get carried away with it. My friends always poke fun at me about that. The bit i did feel sorry for wasnt one that is probably deemed really sad but it was the first time i felt compassion.
The trailer made it look like there was more space action & intensity in it that there was. I had kinda worked out that the majority of that was in the trailer, so i am glad that there were only two more bits of this in the film than you had already seen. The film didnt actually need it.
Brad Pitt was good in it, he had to do the majority of it on his own & everyone else turing up for 15 minutes at a time. But the narration at times was a little bit much. Im not sure we needed it all the time like he was Louis Theroux in the deep south.
Donald Sutherland has still got it. Always have always will. He wasnt in it long but he was so compelling when he was in it, i really wanted to know what happened to him, but i will never get an answer will i? Ruth was brilliant too, needed more of her to show the human side of it even tho… well if youve seen it you will know.
Some stunning cinematography in this film which was so inspiring & beautiful & some of the set pieces wow. Weather they were pictures of space or them just reimagined they were still beautiful & left you feeling lonely which was the point.
& now im going to come to my main gripe with this film. It starts off saying in the near future, so by that im thinking 50 maybe 75 years were looking at 2070 right? But when we use space travel we still use rockets like the ones that send our astronauts to the space station today or the moon in the 60s. However Virgin are sending people into space soon on there space planes which are much more modern than that & also then when they travel its with Virgin. WHAT THE HELL! Also we have been on the moon & mars long enough to have created life in those places & have managed to go all the way to Saturn Jupiter & Neptune… i think thats a little bit more than the near future dont you. Just say in the future people your already making a sci fi film. & that just baffled me throughout.
So yeah it was a good film & is one that should be watched for a beautiful sci fi film, but its not as emotional as people say it is & dont go into it expecting space fights every 5 minutes. You will enjoy it, i just wanted it to be more.
