Its time to see if this is as classy as everyone says this is. According to some people this should be the film that challenges Oppenheimer at the oscars this year. ITs been out in America since November like the very start of it so thats all ive heard people talk about for the last 3 months, that we are finally getting it at the end of January.
Im going on a Saturday morning to see this, it fits in with my life so this should be good. & theres few other people in here with me too. I am one of the youngest people in here to see this though. Which does surprise me obviously not as many millennials are collecting the oscar films like i am.
Trailers, the Iron Claw, Wicked Little Letters, American Fiction & All of us Strangers. All solid all on my radar & i cant wait to watch them all ekkkkkkk.
& then the film started… If this was up for best picture in the year CODA & Nomadland were won oscar, they would have never won, its just a shame its up against Oppenheimer & wont win.
I had a good old laugh at this. maybe a little but too much but i dont care. The whole movie styling being from that era of film & TV making in America (i mean you understood that from just watching the trailer) but it worked so well with the setting. You were taking a step back in time too.
There was a point in this film where i felt sorry for uperty people. I know thats twice in a couple of weeks this has been the case, what the hell is going on with me? I mean some of them were still entitled wankers who id happily give a good old slap to, but there were some where it was like oh come on give them a break.
Paul Giamatti might just might beat Cillian Murphy to best actor at the oscars. I think it all depends how the academy are feeling when they vote. We still have a while before the oscars, but i think so far out of everyone ive seen ( i still have 2 acotrs to go) hes been the best to challenge him. I know i am Cillian biased but Paul was phenomenal & deserves his day of glory for his performance for sure.
The rest of the cast were phenomenal too. I mean DeVine will probably win the Oscar for her performance. She really did suffer in this film & it hurt. But everyone in this film brought their a game & it really shows. So much so that when people come in for one scene, they have to up it to make us care about them even if we dont really know them. I mean i wanted to punch Tate Donovan in the face a lot for the 5minutes hes was in the film for but through everyone acting & saying stuff about him before he arrived, i already hated him & his wife. Thats good story & character building. To feel people grief, anger & frustration throughout the film was so good.
Act 3… i didnt see that coming at all. I mean i saw the end of act 3 probably coming but the rest of it & the two reveals were like ahhhhhhhh no way. It made me sit on the edge of my seat going oh god this changes things. It was soft & sweet but also on a knifes edge too.
The christmas tree & the gifts he gets them, i laughed a lot. Someone would so do that, they really would & thats not an exaggeration, that would so be what would happen & you have no idea. But yea i had a good old laugh at that.
Not only were the costumes & design & set up of the film so of the era, even the framing of certain shots & the way it was filmed made you feel like you were in that time. It was a bit of a shock to leave the cinema & go back to being in 2024 after spending a good couple of hours being comfortable in the past (even though it was well before i was born).
The chase, gym, arm break & then manipulation needs to be talked about much more as a scene & section of the film. It shows characters at their best & worse in the film but also means they have a mutual understanding for each other to get by & forms a good foundation for the rest of the movie.
Going back to the one upmanship & upertyness of it all. IT was funny but also so irritating, but its so what these people would do in the film & how the privileged live & look down on the privileged that arent that privileged. Its just like urgh but it is so so true. Unfraternally that is still the case today.
The ending was very sad, & i wanted something to happen which didnt. Im guessing its because of when it was set, if it was set maybe even 5 years later that could have been the case. It didnt ruin the ending but it would have been nice to have seen something soft at the end. But the respect was there for sure.
& that bottle of booze… HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yea this so far ( i still have a few to go) is the film that can take it away from Oppenheimer. ITs got a bloody good chance & we still have a lot of award season left(well we did we dont now) to see whats going to go down on the big night. This is very much worth your time & i hope its out here by christmas because this will very quickly become yearly festive viewing for me.
