Thursday night cinema straight after work… happy days. Time for a film i know very little about if im honest. I saw the start of the trailer & went ahhh its Will from W1A… im in & stopped it. That was seriously enough to sway me to watch the film. So yea lets do a gothic horror.
Lets start with getting to the cinema & me going to get coffee, as it was straight after work i didnt bring my own, so i walked into Starbucks & the girl who i usually see was there & she smile & said oi max to her colleague, im going to teach you how to make a Mandalorian, to which me & the girl then both looked at each other & said at the exact same time this is the way. Now that is good coffee service. She then did break my heart by saying the cold brew will be off their list come October & ill have to actual order it properly unless i see her going forward. Urgh not fair. Starbucks keep your cold brew please.
Anyhow my screening had about 15 other people in for the 6:20 showing of the invitation. mainly couples or friends around my age & one other random one who was the only person in the screening with me for the first 10mins during the adverts & trailers. Female & was very busy doing her emails.
Trailers… i can now tell the Oppenhimer trailer just by the noise before the universal logo appear that says a lot doesnt it & im still not over the fact he date changes each time. Bodies Bodies Bodies (again weird to see when youve seen the film already) Avoid it, three thousand years (yes pre booked) smile (maybe depends) & the south korean film thats up for all the oscars later in the year (yes). A right mix
& then the film started… Well ive seen worse horror films & better ones. This one is bang average.
I love Hugh Skinner (Will from W1A) but i always knew he couldnt be trusted & this proves it 100%. I mean he starts off all charming & over the top & being like that mad family member you see at weddings who you put up with a few days & then go & now for a 2 year break (we all have one dont deny it people & if you dont you are that person). but then he just disappears & then is there for the finale… shame.
Nathalie Emmanuel was very good, very good. I am still bingeing Thrones so shes on my screen a lot at the moment. I mean she did give away part of the final showdown at the start. When i saw that i was like ahhh thats a useful skill for later to attack someone with. She needs a few more of these to be a fully fledge leading lady if you get me. Shes almost got all her stripes.
Her bestie… i mean i get the point that she wasnt there… but the whole red flags & omfg stuff she was saying & sending was just yep that is so the kinda stuff you need to tell your friends in this situation. I loved her, that would so be me.
Not enough Sean Pertwee, who is now forever cast as a butler bless him. They never really did explain the rest of the staff did they, i mean im guessing they were without ruining it for you all, but it was never confirmed was it.
Walter was a typical upperty british guy in a big manor with all the money & being a bit of a twat at times wasnt he.
It started getting clever at points & i was like ahhh were going somewhere here, something different is going to happen & then it became lazy. I mean i know theres plenty of lore & rules youve got to stick to with this subject, but as someone who knows a lot of them now, it just went a bit ooooh really nah we dont need that, thats too cliché… The council would not be happy that it became so generic at the end of act 2.
Why no other man in that family line & no flash back as to the initial providing or history, its just casually dropped in at the reveal at the end of act 2, start of act 3. If you werent paying attention to the start of the film you would have been like say whattttttttttt. Also that was very rushed too.
So those DNA things work that quickly & get you a friend request straight away to the rest of the fam??
I wanted it to be more gothic than it actually was, i mean act 3 really was, but it wasnt for any of act one or the majority of act 2. If your giving me a dark gothic horror, give me that. I want to be hiding going oh god. I think i only jumped twice & there was one moment that caught me out & then i was like yea but this isnt safe.
Another lockdown film, filmed in a big house so everyone can social distance, but i m pretty sure ive seen that building be used before.
No way did she get through passport control & baggage reclaim that quickly at city airport & then get to where she needed to be still in day light. Bollocks to that. As a brit please Hollywood get our geography correct.
The final showdown started well, but that it just lacked & then was like oh was that that. I mean a better film with them leaving would have looked more iconic with all that shit going down but being average, it was like nah you dont deserve to have that moment film, you have to earn it. There was a point in this bit where i laughed, i wasnt meant to.
An average casual horror film if im honest. Can easily become slight viewing for spooky season thats here early this year by the looks of it. It wasnt good but it wasnt bad, but its nothing for you to go to people oooh you should go watch the invitation, if you get me.
