How do i start of the birthday weekend… how about Psychological Horror. Everyone elses worst type of Horror but the genre of it that i like the most. I aint up for a slasher movie but something like this absolutely. So Edgar, take me to Soho on a friday night.
5:50pm showing on the day of release… its like the old days when i used to be in central brighton to watch a film. I did get there as the adverts were going. I would have been in the screen a little earlier if it wasnt for the 2 groups in front of me , some of whom didnt bring their ID’s for an 18. I mean they got a refund, as they got their tickets from the ticket machine & not a person but still that was awkward. I got to the front & the guy didnt even ask for ID. Im guessing the very grey streak of hair on my head gives that away doesn’t it.
Id say it was mainly 25 to 40 year olds in the cinema, no big groups, mainly couples or odd ones like me but id say it was half sold out which i good. As i said Psychological Horror isnt for everyone is it, so i can understand if this doesnt perform outstandingly at the box office.
Trailers, House of Gucci, Eternals, Mobius & something else horror related that i cant remember but i know i didnt enjoy watching the trailer for it. Just because im going to watch a horror film doesnt mean my trailers have to be horror related too.
& then the film started… Edgar delivers once again baby. Oh it as good it was so good. It just hit every note.
What an amazing story, so clever, i like how her sixth sense isnt really explained but you just go along with it. Its clever in that respect, but how the two worlds mould into one & intertwine & scare the hell out of her & you is brilliant.
Everyone acted there arses off & it all looks like they loved ever second of it. Thomasina & Anya were both so charismatic & you couldnt take your eyes off either of them. They just flowed & it just worked. Also i like Matt Smith but there were points in this film where i really wanted to punch him in the face, that proves how good an actor he is. Also nice little cameo from James & Oliver Phelps, wasnt expecting that at all.
The whole 60s vibe both in the 60s & in the now was very on point. As someone whos currently feeling very retro 90s about everything i appreciate that. Proper nostalgia.
The soundtrack as always in an Edgar Wright film was so on point you looked forward to where that was going next almost as much as you wanted to see where the story was going to. & when the score & remixes & freaky bits & jumps were added into in… wow. I spent a lots of my time watching this on the edge of my chair.
Those teenagers girls at her college needed more of a comeuppance that they actually got. They were so bitch & as someone who was never in with that kind of crowd when i was younger & seeing how spiteful & to faced they were like the real girls made that uncomfortable. I really wanted them to be put in there place & be told to fuck off a bit more than they were.
Im angry i didnt work out 2 of the characters in the film were actually other people in the film. I should have seen that coming & i was upset at myself at the reveals & i was like oh for fuck sake. Especially the second, should have seen that coming a mile off from much earlier on. Proof that cinema can still catch people like me out from time to time.
It was graphic & horrendous enough for its 18 rating. If it had been a 15 i think there would be some people scared for a very long time (hence i went to see a horror film well before my bed time). The subject matter is very adult & uncomfortable at times.
Another film with a beheading (ish) 3 in a row…. whats going on with me?
This is another one of those films youd like to recommend to people but if they dont do psychological horror this wont be for them. I had a bloody brilliant time & left the cinema a little relieved it was over, but so happy i had survived it & seen some amazing acting & soundtrack mixing. Worth it if its you bag.
