When you watch a film & the second its finished you have to blog about it. I have genuinely just turned off my Ps4 after watching together on iPlayer, ive put my lap top on while making an iced coffee & i have Federer vs Norrie at Wimbledon on in the background & i am going to write but not write about the fabulous Together which you can all watch on iPlayer right now & go wow at. (Cinema Club style i think everyone needs to watch this at some point).
I recently sat here & typed that Tucci & Firth nailed there acting in Supernova… McAvoy & Horgan do the same here. A really uncomfortable 2 hander about life in lock down in the UK for the last year. It puts you through every emotion you have been through & gives you a glimpse at everyone’s life & its stunning & horrific & it makes you cry & you just sit there & the end of it & breath & you do just sit there & think yeah ive got through that, i have lived through a pandemic. Wow.
Its the little things in it which are just hidden or foreshadowed, like how much toilet roll do they buy on day one, getting ready for everyone at Christmas, talking about his business, zooms. Its stuff we all experience & can recognise as the (& i hate that im going to say this) new normal day to day life.
I cried. There was a really heart breaking bit about 30 minutes in which really hurt & i cried quite a bit & when on of them was trying to comfort the other it just got worse & worse & you wanted to lean into the tv screen & hug them.
Im not in a couple, so i can imagine that suddenly being locked down together as a couple must be hard i mean i lived with my parents for it & as much as i was grateful for the company & i love them to bits, i was very grateful for my walks & getting out of the house. So i can imagine that there were so many people in this situation & it does make you feel for them.
The call out of the government & how they have dealt (well not dealt) with lockdown & the pandemic is brilliant. I was hoping it would have the guts to do it at some level but then it went for it & it basically went shame on them, that was brilliant. IT was sad at the same time due to the subject matter they were talking about at the same time but still good on the film for having the balls to tell the government they have fucked up & good on the BBC for funding it & showing it.
Mushrooms were such a throw away line & bit of the story but ended up being so important.
Its hard to say that i loved it, but i did. It sums up what weve all been through & because we still dont have our spontaneity back yet (2 weeks to go people) it was just the most relatable thing i have watched in ages. This is going to be talked about for a very long time as the perfect lockdown covid time capsule. It sums up the last 18 months perfectly.
This time next year both McAvoy & Horgan will have Baftas for this. I seriously if youve got the inkling to watch it suggest you all watch it for the absolute acting master class. Stunning & truthful & honest. Home truths always hit us the hardest.
