Spoilers
So years ago i went & saw this at the cinema & had an emotional breakdown, im not entirely sure why but i did. It was never my intention to watch this again, but what i wanted to watch on all4 for some reason isnt available… not idea why so i need something just over an hour long. So ive found this on netflix, why not. Lets see if i was just being overly emotional me last time.
Oh yea even while doing admin & watching this while playing catch up on my phone, i was still an emotional wreck at the end when Shaun has to say goodbye to the alien. Its so sweet & true & honest & you just sit there & cry as LuLa parents come to pick them up & take them home. ITs so adorable & even without concentrating at some points, that is just such a gut punch. Its so beautiful & so well done. Its Ardman at its best, it really is.
If a word is spoken in this film, i cant remember it, theres a few hahaha or muffled noises that sound like words, but its all about the faces the reactions & the scores. You dont need words to tell a story & that is an important message in a kids film as any other message in this film. If a story is told correctly, it doesnt matter. & the love & craft in this story proves that perfectly.
I love that on the TV screen its the Wrong trousers & there are a few rabbits knocking about & other Ardman easter eggs. The one i think they always miss out on is not having the chickens look like the ones from chicken run, but you know what ill forgive them for the rest of the little easter eggs & moments along the way.
I love the woman in charge of the UFO hunting. Shes so stressed & over the top about it all which i completely get. But then the face turn at the end when Lula parents are actually the aliens she saw when she was a child, oh that hits. That really hits in the feels. Its a proper nostalgia moment that you arent expecting. That hurts. She was proved she was right & then she gets to see them again. Its beautiful.
The theme park the farmer sets up for everything is so crap &then the world turns up when shit goes down that he makes a fortune & the press & probably gets his combine harvester. Entrepreneuring done right & wrong at the same time good on him.
I love that the guy who finds the UFO is more concerned about his Chips. I love that. If im honest that would so be me especially if they were Brighton Palace Pier chips (they are the best in the world). That is such a british thing to do tho. Ahh you see that UFO thats impressive but do you know whats cooler… chips. HEHE
All the random shiz those sheep & that dog do on the farm are funny, but you just kinda expect the random shiz now. I mean sheep building a theme part, perfect, not gonna bat an eyelid at that.
when Lula uses their powers to create their home world & then lets Shaun see their home & past via the mind trick, thats bloody beautiful &clever for stop animations. They are such touching moments. They really are & so cleverly done.
The highlight of the film for its target audience tho is when they go to the super market & shit goes down & they eat & drink everything. That is a 5 year old kids dream, & lula is living the best life they can. We’ve all wanted to do that at some point havent we, just run through tesco & asda trying everything.
A Bull in a china shop… epic… knew the second we saw that at the star, that this was gonna happen. Still made it very funny.
Both the UFO flights are very cool & so much stuff goes down, & both are very clever & sweet.
The car wash being the secret ufo base is amazing. I love that. I have a car wash at the bottom of my road, but i doubt thats one. Im still however 100% convinces that the southwick tunnel is a nuclear bunker. Thats where im going if the end of the world approaches. Im sure of it.
The score is brilliant. It really does have to rely on it to tell the rest of the story as theres no words. & its so good.
& the animation, aww beautiful. I always love Ardman animation, someone whos been brought up on it for all my life, i do sometimes take it granted, but it is rather beautiful & so well crafted & done. Its the little things that you suddenly notice & then just go wow.
This is not the bet Ardman work oh no (shout out to the wrong trousers) but it so works & is so lovely & emotional & fun & just a joy to watch. As a brit i always love a bit of this & its always gonna be apart of me & a cuppa tea that i like. I feel sorry for anyone who didnt grow up with any of these guys in their life.
A reason to have kids in the future is to show them this & have them fall in love with Ardman & Shaun of the sheep too.
