Spoilers
I remember being little & not really knowing what oscars or baftas were but knowing this winning best picture was a bit of an out cry of the hell. So im here with iplayer willing to give it ago. Im sure its perfectly fine & is very clever but lets see if its as good as the voters said.
Its very random, its really really random. I mean its good random. But its basically how Shakespeare came up with the play Romeo & Juliette while having his own love affair with a random woman who Colin Firth wants to Marry. I mean its good & nice & very romantic, but its still random.
Hating Colin Firth is always hard to do it really is. & it was weird seeing him as a villain in this but also feeling for him when his life is basically ruined too by the events that unfold in the story. He does get the moral victory in the end, but still. I cant hate him in this. He needed to piss me off more.
So i listen to fighting talk i have done since i was about 14 & they always joke that comedian Simon Day was in oscar winning Shakespeare in Love whenever hes on, always have done. & he was in it for all of 50 seconds. & when he appeared, i did the DiCaprio Meme of ahhhh there he is, its that moment. Bloody hilarious making my own fun out of it all.
Got to feel sorry for Joseph Fiennes. He is bloody handsome & such a rouge & portrays Bill so well, but this was the high of his film career (if not seen hand maids tale im sorry) & he isnt his brother is he. Imagine it being the other way around. I mean he does a bloody good job he really really does. He so compelling & good & you do as the viewer fall in love with him for the word he says & the wit he spouts. Its lush & you do just go ohhhh yes this is doing something for me.
Gweneth, oooh yea she rocks this. She is the star of this film there is no doubt about that. If she doesnt boss it, it doesnt work. & she just hits every mark. Although how no ones else at the globe rehearsing realised she was a girl in disguise, is crazy. Also surly Bill must have been a bit concerned he was attracted to a boy, back in the day. Not now oh no, it was frowned upon then. The shock horror from the audience when she steps out on the stage as a women is amazing in act 3. I love that, it would have been met with that reaction too. Stunning.
I didnt know Rupert Everett was in this & hes a dick but then very clever & then gets killed off by mistake, thats a waste, such a waste.
The opposite of that is that as much as i love the Dench, shes in the film for all of 10mins & then wins an oscar for it…. really, was no one else up for an oscar that year. I mean she is good, but academy award winning? Geoffrey Rush deserved more for his screen time & being so clever & controlling, he was good.
& then Martin Clunes & Mark Williams turn up in this too. Was everyone half decent in the 90s who was british given a line, i mean im not complaining. Its very very reassuring to see them all get in on this but at points i was like hang on who are you again in this?
Ben Affleck was in this due to his Good Will Hunting success wasnt he. But once again he proves hes only good in stuff hes written or directed (or Gone Girl but no one can be bad in that film its bloody brilliant). He just kept pissing me off in this.
Theres something about a ball in a period drama where shit really does go down & this film delivers that too. So much random stuff happens at all the dances they have. Maybe its all the costume & finery & masks, it just kind of works doesnt it.
Seeing the Globe in all its glory & being set back in the day did give me Goosebumps, it really did. It looked lush & as someone whos performed on that stage (with the school aged 14) it brought back memories. Imagine the crowds in the heyday, loving the comedies & tragedies & just lapping it up, bringing the stories to life. Daunting but magical.
So ive looked through the oscar nods for best picture that year & this is actually the first nominee ive seen for that award, so i cant actually judge if it deserved its win. It is a bloody good film & i enjoyed watching it &the twists & the story telling was done effortlessly. But is it better than Private Ryan??? only my viewing time will tell.
I am very glad ive seen it & it does deserve its name on a nominee list definitely.
