So when we zoom we all ask what weve been watching over the last week & my friend Jess said shed finally seen captain Phillips on netflix as it was added this week & i said yea i saw that i will be watching it this week & she said it was the best film she had seen on netflix this year. So im looking forward to this. Got to love the Hanks after all.
I was was intensely stressed watching this film from the second it started to the moment the credits appeared. I just sat there on the edge of my chair going oh god no, now what. & if i film can keep you in that much suspense, its bloody worth it isnt it.
When is Hanks not good? That is a serious question, has anyone ever seen a Hanks film where hes crap. I mean even if the film is crap, Hanks still acts his arse off. He really is brilliant. & when you are watching him go from being so calm & reassuring & a leader to being that blubbering mess at the end of the film & having PTSD & saying his goodbyes when he thinks hes going to die, that man can do it all. That is why he is the GOAT & that is why we all put on a Hanks film from time to time, we need the reassurance that we are going to watch a brilliant performance.
Abdi is brilliant as the pirate who basically imposes his way to get onto the boat in the first place & then once on there takes charge of the rest of them & leads the charge. Hes brilliant, especially with al lof the conflicts he has to go through from people on the boat to his fellow pirates. Considering your meant to want him to fail & be captured, but you cant help but feel for the guy & want him to be safe as well, when we get to the end of it. He was just doing what he thought he was right.
The PTSD at the end & shock is exactly what people would go through after this situation defiantly & how it all just kicks in & you really do feel for him, thats bloody epic acting & would be entirely how it would happen. so many films would have ended before that moment, but it was so important to show some of the aftermath of it all.
Every single boat chase was steeped in dram & omg moment, from failing engines to not hooking on ladders, brilliant. The score ramped the stakes up too. It really was brilliant & i sat on the edge of my chair wanting them to succeed (so then the plot could move on) but also not wanting them to so everyone would be safe.
$30,000 isnt enough??? Im sorry i know they wanted a lot of money but if you offer anyone at any point $30000 (which in uk money is about £20,000) everyone would bit your hand off. Hell £100 & most people would let alone 20K. That would change their lives, they should have taken it.
cutting off the power & smashing the glass to save the crew was brilliant. Really clever. I understand they are naïve pirates with not much money but maybe finding some shoes would be a good idea. I mean it wasnt as graphic as die hard with the glass, or maybe im now just used to it after all these years. But that was so clever by the crew & im glad they all get out of it alive. There were some touch & go moments especially up on the bridge where i thought someone might die or get shot.
Is towing a life boat that easy, yes i get its a rescue boat but still…. is it really its hard enough to tow a car?
I like the fact that despite him being in such terror & having to deal with so much theres still moments of humanity once hes been captured on that life boat, he tries to help them, to even warn them at points as to what may happen if hes not returned alive. Helping with medical advise too what a guy.
Its just such a tense brilliant film, which stresses you out & is up there as a modern great defiantly. In years to come schools will show captain Phillip’s for lots of different reason & subjects to teach values or life or just how to make a good film. ITs going to be around for a very very long time & we all need to appreciate it a bit more. There not much else to talk about really. Youve got to watch it & feel it to enjoy it & understand it.
I messaged my friend when i was done & said we can talk now & she was like oh thank god for that & she went off on one about how its the most captivated shes been of a film in a long time. Shes got that right.
