Spoilers
Netflix didnt work last night for some reason, so i watched disney plus instead. Today it is, so im watching American Psycho. Its always been on my list to see what its liek & what its about. I mean its Christian Bale killing people right it cant be that weird can it….
Okay so one of the main things i took away from that film, was he had a very nice chair in his lounge in the first like 5 mins on the film, which looked epic & amazing. I want that chair. If anyone can find that & send that to me i would really appreciate it.
Other than that, the film is sooooooooooooooooooooooo fucked up. Oh my god. I mean as white person in the west & from a first world country, i automatically have some privilege compared to others, however the amount of Male American White Privilege in this film was so obnoxious & quite unbearable at points. I mean i get that that was the actual point & he could do what the fuck he wanted & fuck who he wanted, but it was really awful & awkward to watch but also you just couldnt not watch it. You were grossed out & appalled but wanted to see what he did next.
Christian Bale was amazing properly off the hinges in every respect & was so outrageous that you just sat there & went is he acting or is he having the time of his life doing all of this. Must be an absolute joy to do all that while acting & just have fun with it. He would never get away with doing the normal stuff in real life.
The business card (dick) off it the perfect example of male white privilege, it really is but you just so go along with it. IT also shows you how much of a dick everyone else is.
The only 2 normal people in this film are Reese (but she only pops up when shes needed) & his secretary whos the girl from Bloodline on Netflix. I was really worried when he invited her round for dinner that he would actually kill her. Im guessing at the end when she finds out exactly what shit hes up to & drawing in his book she does call the police. I mean i know its the 80s but still.
The Narration is more irritating than helpful if im honest. Okay yes its nice to hear his inner thoughts but still, didnt add anything until right at the end when he gets away with it all.
Im still confused if people were in on the murders & he just got away with it all or if it all just was in his head. The last bit where he calls the lawyer & kills random people must have been but the rest of it no that was real.
All of his sex games are so awkward to watch, however his random conversations with the women before hand are kinda all right, makes you realise how weird he is & i liked that.
Some of the Deaths were amazing, im not sure Leto deserved it if im honest as much has he was a dick he was the same amount of a dick as the rest of them. All those bodies in the wardrobe or fridge, the fridge is a staple now for bodies isnt it but in the 2000s im guessing was still shocking & cool. The nail gun looked like the most interesting but we didnt get to see it, but the chainsaw down a stair case… i laughed a lot at that. Which probably does make me a bad person
Willem Defoe wasnt a good detective was he. He should have worked it out much earlier with the alibies & stories. Unless he was a dream too.
Panicking at someone being gay would have been an 80s thing in New York but watching that in 2021 after just having watched its a sin is very disturbing. Thats not the attitude you have now no no nope.
The pacing was good until we get to the cash machine & then it ramps it up to 11 for no reason then drops it back to a 3. That was weird after being at a good pace & the slowness adding to the suspense to then suddenly go ball out was a bit of a shift.
I enjoyed watching it & am glad i have seen it, but im not from that era or that kind of white privilege. ITs obnoxious beyond belief & that is the point so in that respect its a good film, but i probably wont be watching it again.
