Like with all recent Netflix/Prime/Disney films im going to do this cinema club style. Especially as i know so many of you are doing award season & have this to watch.

My Tom Hiddleston watch along was called off last night which is a shame, but technical issues cant be helped can they. So i have a free friday night so its time to watch an oscar nominated movie, which is currently the front runner for the prize next weekend, so lets see how quiet the western front really is.

Oh god. I mean i know its a war film, but there are points where i was just like oh god. Oh fucking God. There was a tank scene that was grim viewing, & a few stabbing which werent nice, yea it was grim but so well done. Theres a bit in a bombed pit which was horrendous & is probably the 5mins that makes this the front runner at the moment. Its do or die & its intense & such a brilliant part just after the half way point of the film. Stunning.

I always say that subtitles make everything more intense as you have to read & concentrate so you dont miss a bloody thing. Im going to have to start watching all films with them soon, i know i am. It makes the experience so much more enthralling. Also maybe its the fact in a non english film, because you dont know the actors as well, it makes it feel more real.

There was a point in act 3 when an announcement was made & i went oh come the fuck on & then when something happened I actually did scream at my TV oh Fuck NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! It was so unfair. bloody generals wanting a final moment of glory.

didnt expect someone to appear in it, that was like ahhhhhhhh of course.

The bit with the uniforms was horrible, but so would have been what happened, at the end of the day there was a war going on, why make new clothes. Not nice but honest. Also everyone thinking the war was going to be glamourous & easy & that theyd win it easily, that was hard to watch, knowing how it all went down.

some of the cinematography (not just the bloody grim bits) was beautiful. The running, the marching & the hills, the trenches the mud. Even the bailing the water out moment. So well done. Every war film has to have someone run straight at the camera after Mendes did it dont they.

I was looking at some of the buildings in it & going ahhh i know where they filmed this after watching JoJo Rabbit. I know that street. I mean thats my film nerd brain but its true.

There was a litter reading bit that was bitterly heart-breaking. I loved it but i welled up quite a bitas that was read.

It didnt feel like 2h30 either, it flew by.

& i dont want to say anymore about the film. Id like you all to watch it.

Is it going to win next week, yea its got a huge chance. Will i be upset if it does? No i dont think i will be. I mean i have my fave & what should but if it does i wont be miserable about it. Is well worth a watch if you love war films & if your award season collecting its essential viewing. It Grim & beautiful equally.
