Spoilers
Looking back now, why the hell did our parents let us watch this when we were so little, its wrong. Like i seriously need to have a chat with them & all my friends parents. I mean its harmless but to let you 7 to 9 year olds watch Ali G wasnt very responsible of them. Okay none of us are gangsters or in a gang war or take it to the extreme of these but still. So this really isnt going to have aged well is it.
Sacha is still bloody funny as Ali & trying to save the Staines community centre. It goes to chow that even though hes a much better actor now & is so versatile, he made his name from this character & his mad stunts & he owned it. Its always the one that if he ever has to get people to remember why he is so good at what he does, it is this. The TV show is better but still.
Martin Freeman being a gangster was the craziest thing ever, hed just got the job in the office when he was filming this & you just sit there & watch them both & go okay yeah this is weird that its the same person. I guess the costume makes you think the hell is happening but still. This is seriously world renowned Bafta & globe award winning Martin Freeman being a gangster.
Michael Gambon as the PM & Charles Dance being the dodgy MP are so believable tho. You do sit there & watch the politics of it all go on & happen there & just think have we actually moved on from 2002. They are still a bunch of back stabbing lying idiots who will do anything to get power. So he nailed that. It is funny that he does win his election tho.
The Mi Julie…. Oh god all of it so wrong. Lad culture in the late 90s early 00s in these kinda films was really cringe. I guess one day i will look back at the inbetweeners like that, or maybe not as i went on the mad trips as the same time as them, but here its just like oh okay then. Especially when that other aid tries to seduce him & when he has Sex with his Julie in the prime ministers bedroom, & then the trade talks happening at the same time.
Borat makes a surprise appearance, hehe. I completely forgot that happened so that was VERY NICE to see…. completely intended that.
The bit in LA at the start with all the real gangster was mad.
The bit at the end in Jamaica is weird but so how the film needed to end if im honest.
Breaking in to get the tape is amazing. All their gangster skills & all the gangs coming together to get the tape to save Staines, is amazing. I love it. Its british take the piss out of yourself humour & its amazing, coming up with all those ideas was so good. & then east & west side coming together brilliant. BUNDLE!!!!
The Life support classes are so dodgy but so perfect, i mean Sacha probably did actually give those kids some good life lessons while filming, but yea they are cool. & i love its so early 2000s to save your leisure centre. It was such a thing then up to about 2005 for people to try & do that. Ours wasnt in trouble til about 3 years ago here so we were lucky.
Ali keep interrupting the film for side bit ha. Also i wonder if that phone number works that he puts up half way through.
He sucked off a horse…. I mean i laugh a lot at that line for a lot of reasons & if your british you completely understand why.
Going to the check point to look at all the seized goods… I mean not that i would but if you were that kinda person you so would wouldnt you… & then using it for the UN chat to make everyone happy, wonderful.
Its funny it serves a purpose but it does belong back with the start of lad culture in the early 00s. Ali G will always be a legend, & this film is an epic time capsule about just how good & mad he was.
