Number 44 my lucky number so had to be one of my favourite films
6 years ago I was listening to the Film reviews on five live waiting for the new Harry Potter review, but before they did that they review Moon. I was very intrigued by the story which they hardly gave anything away about. & then started to Google about where I could see the film near me,while listening to the Potter Review (unhappy event gate). No one near me was showing it I had no car or money to get to anywhere that could see it. So when it came out on DVD I was bursting to finally watch it.
& OMFG it didn’t disappoint.
What a film
So brief plot analysis for you. Sam Bell has a three year contract with a Luna company to harvest the moon with aid of AI Gerty. However nearing the end of his time he starts seeing things which causes an accident on the surface. He wakes up to find out all is not right & goes to explore before realising the moon is not what it seems.
I love this film, so this is your last chance to stop reading, if you want to watch it, with no spoilers at all. I don’t want to ruin it for you but I may type off on one here.
Right everyone ready you sure… Ok let’s do this.
Clones are a huge part of Scifi but that fact that to start with neither Sam Bell realise they are the clone or the original is cleaver. Usually they all know in these types of films that they are clones, but here it adds a more emotional dimension to their character. Something that Sam Rockwell does amazingly.
Sam Rockwell is really underrated. Seriously. Hes just a brilliant actor who is so cool yet creepy yet emotional yet funny. You hate to love & love to hate. I think the same can be said with Sam Bell. He has his moment but you just sit there & go I’m rooting for this guy to save the day. It takes him a while to come to terms with his true nature.
Kevin Spacey Gerty is chilling. Voicing the ai computer who helps look after the moon. His emoji faces which over time go from bland boring to crying emotionally are just amazing, proving that he too can feel sorrow. He helps to save the day, however he doesnt entirely have a full memory as he call humans and clones programming, which makes the new sam question him.
New Sam Bell is a jerk but wouldn’t you be if you found out you were cloned from a clone. However his plan to teach the company a lesson is so insightful. The plan is to send the old Sam home and have new sam sit in the vehicle that crashed, so old sam can have a life he always dreamed of, while waking up another sam clone. However old sam isnt well, due to his ageing clone, and being exposed when the car crashed he is dieing. They end up swapping places, but not before sharing some tender moments about the memory’s they share, as they are both Sam. New Sam goes back to earth and challenges the company for negligence & illegal activity so that clones have rights.
The clone room is scary but could one day be a reality which is really sad. So sad. The fact that the clones are implanted to make them think everything is good & that they are going to go home, when they are just incinerated. Its chilling but at the end of the day everyone does die, and this happens to us all, Clone Human or machine, we all outlive our purpose, or die because of it. (sorry that got a bit deep)
I love this film so much its in my top 5 films of all time, i seriously recommend you find it on demand or netflex or HMV for £2 and watch it. It makes me so happy inside. Well done Duncan Jones
This is also why iv stopped the review here for 2 reasons 1) i wrote a brilliant review than blogger deleted it after i published it (how dare they) & 2) this is a film you need to discover for yourself really to have an emotional attachment.
