time for a classic in the a to z of film. I love this movie & it’s just perfect for a Sunday night in. Bring on some Lee Evans & Nathan Lane chaos for childhood memories.
We will get the Lee Evans love in done first. I am a british millennial. He is my comedy hero so watching this as a kid probably set me up to love him when he went on tour, even with the dodgy accent. You just well… you forgive him. He is always chaotic joy no matter what he is in.
Then for him to be teamed up with another hero Nathan Lane, inspired casting, the chalk & cheese brothers, both owning it. I really didnt realise how well i was spoilt as a kid watching this. It wasnt until i was a teen that i was like hang on that voice & then as an adult you laugh hard when she says to someone not in the best way Hakuna Matata. Politically wrong now, but in the 90s it was done for laughs.
If you dont find that mouse adorable, we cant be friends. Seriously, even watching it now. Yes there are bits where your like okay thats not the best animating of it, but still for the time they did a good job, especially playing dead & the flooding bit with him. Yes the end a little less believable but still.
I love the traps the set to catch the mouse. So over the top. The fact they get a crazy cat thats like nope, all those mouse traps, the stink bomb, even bloody Christopher Walken gets taken out by the mouse. Its madness. YEs its all childish humour but can you imagine the fun they had trying to write & plan these for the film to make them look right. It all just works & you could so imagine it.
All they had to do was sell the factory at the start, would have solved so many issues for them both. Really would have done. Yes its funny to see their lives get turned upside down & i love the fact that their dad in the portrait keeps changing each 10 seconds as to how he feels about his kids. Judging you beyond the grave. But i can then see why those worker all revolted & rebelled against them. Although they were all a little old & near retirement age werent they.
How did no one else in the rest of the world not realise this was a missing historical house that was worth millions? No one thought to catalogue this years ago before this all happened. Also if they had the plans they could have easily sold it at the start to give to someone else do restore it & then they would have to deal with the mouse. Also by proving they had the LaRue surely they have been able to have got all the more money for it for the redevelopment & stuff & not be kicked out, because it would easily be paid off & make loan companies look better. Instead they get the money off greedy april, i get it is do but still.
That tub never belonged & im glad it sunk to the bottom of the frozen lake. Also no way would they have covered that floor up so quickly after the kaboom & those stairs were so fucked.
The girls he meets in town are weird but are strangely charming, but proves a point that he was built for so much more than just being this & i love the fact that one of them has hair like string, its brilliant.
Oh no, i forgot to add air holes… hehehehe
If only sorting out your issues involved you both falling out to wanting to kill each other & then that deals with the issue that made you fall out in the first place.
The auction… The auction scene is iconic. Im sorry it is. From the moment people turn up to the line this house will stand forever is wonderful. From the handing over of the lucky sting, to the gavel, to the chaos, the fire, the choking, the extra money & then the flooding. ITs spectacular & chaotic & wonderful & even as an adult watching it back, it feels organic & is exactly what would happen in this world. Batshit hilarious from start to finish.
A little bit of a stretch that it would be this helped create cheese string after all of this. I mean its nice the mouse feel sorry for them but helps & gives them a new life & purpose & they can both use their skills.
I never got why april (even now as an adult) wouldnt want him. She was just to selfish if im honest. She was a user & then a chucker when you were no longer useful.
Its still bloody good fun. Yes some bits are dated now for sure, but you could find a lot worse films from the 90s for comedy than this & its always good to watch some Lee Evans. ITs well worth a revisit peoples for sure.
