Spoilers
Chris Evans is in my dreams at the moment, im not complaining. So i was thinking what could i watch. Im planning on viewing all the MCU in order next year, & im not in a scifi or concentrating move & i know my mama wants to come around to watch knives out soon too, so that leaves the Fantastic Four doesnt it… I remember this getting slated but i enjoyed it. So lets see 16 years later if it was that bad or weather i was right
Its not aged well, i mean i know that the MCU now churns out content like its butter, but this starts part of the Marvel revival. but there are so many bits where you can see that they meant well but didnt execute it at all.
Now i know this film was meant to create & establish the careers of those who were in it to astronomical level, but lets be honest who in 2005 thought it was going to be Johnny Storm that would end up being the Hollywood darling? Seriously. I dont think anyone thought Chris Evans would go on to become the major star of this. I mean i get Jessica Alba going im not just going to go & be a blonde pretty one all the time, but the only other person from this film who hits a huge high is Kerry Washignton, & shes in it for all of 5mins being blind.
I’m not saying Ioan wasnt bad, he was a good mr fantastic but it could have been someone with a more leading man vibe than him. He was just there being all sciencey & then just being a distraction & then being a leader. I mean hes more of a damsel in distress than Sue. She then has to go save him, i mean thats nice for the role swap but still.
So hes the best scientist in the world but he mis judged his calculations for the solar flare that badly. I mean yea i would be pissed off too if that was my company & you lost all that money for me, but then when they all become heroes they dont go on the ahh we created that band wagon. Which you know considering this is the 00s they so would have been. Also that solar flare being animated as it hits them isnt well edited but is very much of the year & the style, so cant slag it off too much.
Their power reveal is vey 00’s but its not been improved that much since then. I mean it has but still with some of them its a bit cringe. I mean sue disappearing but not her clothes… no wonder she wanted out of the franchise once shed done the second & semi retired for the way they treated her. & then Chris Evans being smoking hot… i mean then he wasnt, he is now tho. But then nah he was just another jock & didnt realise how hot he would become in the future.
When they first use their powers on the bridge to save the day is very good & very clever. I really like that. They are deemed scary & not good & then they are all suddenly heroes when they save a load of people. But that still doesnt stop his finance breaking up with him. Thats just so wrong. She said shed love him what ever, but nah hes now made out of brick so fuck that.
Their suits taking on their powers was actually very clever & a god way to keep to put them in that & make them become iconic. They were nice space suits too.
So Doom, hes cool. Even his murdering & torturing to cool. However how the rest of them hadnt noticed his slight powers until he cures Ben is ridiculous. I mean i know its a film & were in on it & know hes gonna be the bad guy, but nah that was just a bit too obvious until it was too late.
Everybody need a science & leering to live together under difficult circumstances montage…
She complete friend zones Doom for the majority of the film, so of course she was never going to agree to his engagement, i mean not that she had any chemistry with Mr Fantastic either. The only time they did was when they talked science. & she kept going well its not like that… men get the point. If a girl say no she means no.
Suddenly half way through act 3 we start asking science questions & lessons to people too. Thats not happened throughout the rest of the film but now for act 3 its really important, like they suddenly went ahh lets just keep doing this now & at no point decide to bring this in earlier in the film.
popping your popcorn on one hand to warm it up, now thats cool. I need that skill.
We have a planetarium in Chichester & whenever i watch this film i really want to go to it & then i realise its expensive at the weekend & a pain to get to. Darn it.
The way Doom plays them all against each other is good scheming, but he ultimately fails. I mean he gets his super power because of it but if all he had to do was wait for him to leave, why didnt he do it earlier.
The final show down is good, its not just a big beam going up onto the sky. Melting him was pretty cool & everyone learning there lessons from the film & actually realising they are better as a team than solo & doing the supernova is pretty cool. even if corny.
& this is also the whole mid credit stuff that Marvel now thrive off, by teasing the Doom return in the next one by putting him on that ship.
The script isnt the best & some of the sets are very lazy. All there budget went on the space station, turning sue invisible & Johnny on fire, & if were honest that isnt all that convincing at times. It could have been better. Its generic but fun.
So yea its not aged well, but its definitely not the worst super hero film iv seen in the last few years. & without this we probably dont get someone going you know what lets try & make Iron Man a thing 2 years later. So thanks for the legacy you unintentionally kickstarted.
