Spoilers
MATT DAMON!!!!
Thats my one per film. Time to watch a film which now looking back at it would be better as 3 45 min tv episodes, but was still bloody good & really does make you think. Lets see how i feel about it now a few years later, i cant have been the person who was wrong about this film as the only one who enjoyed it right?
You know what i might write this in 3 sections actually then you can all understand what i mean by that
so
Section One the actual down sizing & ruining original relationship
Section Two the actual life as a small person & story there
Section Three the trippy ending & saving the world stuff
So thats the film summed up in a nut shell If you dont want to ready any further i understand. lets get onto the rest of it…
After i praise Matt Damon, hes meant to be playing someone around my age im guessing. Everyone always talk about him & his wife being a nice young couple & all the kids they know are around the age my friends kids are, so hes meant to be a first millennial isnt he when they decide to shrink, you know 30 to 37 years in ago. Matt Damon when filming this at the youngest would have been 47, thats not young. I mean he pulls it off & acts his arse off & is such a loveable character that you cant help but smile when hes on the screen & you really do finally want something to go right for him & for him to get all he ever wanted in life. Hes bloody brilliant in all 3 stages of the film (even the end which we will get to there as i said above trippy) but he is the star & he makes it.
So…
Section One Original Life & Downsizing Process.
Its a bloody good concept it really is. What would it be like if part of the worlds population was 5inches tall. What would they do, would they live the same life as the rest of us, how do they cope. The idea about doing it to save the world is epic too, you know help out, less waste, less water used, less electricity too. Its such an amazing idea that you do just sit there & go yes this is really going to work.
How many creatures did they test it on first. I mean also kudos to those people for volunteering to do it, You know must have been scary.
So when we first meet the downsized community a few years pass, & in that time the new worlds for them to live in are thriving & have lots of people there. Okay yes its a novelty & that you think you are saving the world, but would there really in the real world be that many people from all different countrys to decide yep im going to this to make it that lucrative. You know the world wants us all to get electric cars in the next 5 years. Hybrids i can see that yes but pure electric which will cost the government a fortune i doubt it. & thats cheaper than downsizing & yet thats too expensive.
I like the fact that everything costs less once downsized that makes sense, but to that extent really. I mean yes Neil Patrick Harris & Laura Dern put on a show & make it all feel glamorous but surely after a few weeks of living like that youd get bored right. I mean diamonds are nice but you know.
I also like when people ask hang on why arent you small or do small people get a full vote or have opinions or a similar wage etc. They are all very good questions, which the film doesnt actually really answer it just dances around the edges of it. I know it doesnt answer it because its a film & its not real however, surly there would be a policy in place for this.
The actual downsizing process im really glad you actually see & all the way through thats brilliant. I love that. From the separation to his wife as they are different genders before they go to get small to him turning up at his house on his own with all his keep sakes. Its all just so clever & well thought out as to how it would be done & how it happens. ITs amazing. See if youve had time to think about that process why havent you thought about those other bits.
She is a bitch for leaving him she really is. I mean yes you dont know how you would cope in that situation, but maybe she should have been more up front about it before being made small instead of just sitting there awkwardly smiling like oh im up for this not. ITs clear shes not from the way she acts so when she betrays him & leaves him & gets a divorce, its just like nah you are a cow you can fuck off.
Section Two Actual 5Inch Life Story
Once they are small & hes got divorced we then see how his life is being small, which for the most part is much like being big, which is fair enough. They even reference it at some points in the film, just like oh yea were not in big world. But some of the cinematography from that is amazing. That Rose, wow. I mean yes i know its a huge Fake but someone in props had to make that. The rain on the net, the insects & butterflies trying to get in. The fact that the boat is sent via fedex to get to where he wants to sail too. Its just all so clever & you do every now & then just look at it & go wow (again we will get to the end in a minute).
Was Christof Waltz just promised a piss up in PJs for the entire film? I mean if he was that was what he did. I mean its minimal effort but i love his vibe & his partys & hes just fantastic. The ultimate playboy who just doesnt give a shit anymore. I mean yes i would be pissed off if my neighbour was like that but still. I mean hes a good guy.
The single mum i get the reference & the joke, but it was an esy way out for him for the relationship wasnt it. & shes just meh no wonder he chucks her.
The lady from Vietnam is so lovely & is all that is positive with the world & is just so full of joy, especially after everything she has been through after being downsized against her will as a punishment & her leg amputation. But thats why it works, she knows shes got a bad hand in her last life so she wants to help people in this new life & be a beacons of hope for them.
Altho not understanding that matt isnt actually a doctor & gets him to try & save everyone & then he breaks her leg so he has to work for her doing the cleaning jobs, is bloody funny. It also then reasserts his belief in life (okay yes it takes until the very very end of the film for this to happen but it does) those few weeks cleaning & getting food & medicine for her friends really sorts him out & gives him a new purpose. Altho Waltz face when he opens the door to see him is bloody brilliant.
I like that even in paradise theres still those that are less fortunate, it puts it really in perspective that after all of those promises of a better happier life being small you can still suffer & it isnt all diamonds & mansions. Well dont film for including that, other films so wouldnt have done that.
Dont be short with me… Id have thrown that phone out the window.
Section Three Norway Trip, the Tripp & the End
When they say they have to head off to Norway to get away from her is a bit like oh really & then she tells her story & yo udo get really emotional & realise actually all of them took her & what she did & what shes been through for granted & they all do then actually realise yes girl your epic, so isnt ice they all have that moment together & go to Norway.
I know that the kid who was the first small Baby to be Born is like insta famous & goes everywhere, but the rest of them didnt, they all went back to Norway, okay yes i get at the end its interesting what they do but still, that colony was still working & not just for show, or guest but for everyday.
The film only mentions the end of the world & methane when it needs to & for the end it loves to pile that on, to get the original small people to go into a bunker to save the world. I mean yes they were mad enough to do that liek 10 years ago or however long ago it was. But all of them were a still alive & b all willing to go into a hole in the ground for the next 2000 years.
The whole sunrise sun set i do kind of get, but its all far to Stonehenge druids for me. Ive never ever got that side of that. Its to random of a tripp & just feels suddenly to be like oh & now were going to do this inner peace thing with like 10mins to go. Thats where it gets weird.
They built that underground world in what 10 years fuck that.
Why not net to stop the insects, its too close to the water. Okay so then what a bout the fish & creatures in the fjord which might come to eat you? & then the butterflies straight over head, not one butterfly ever thought ooooh human dinner tonight.
was Matt the only outsider going down the hole? I mean surly he wouldnt know anyone there which would make him sad for the first 2 years or so. I mean hes been depressed for the last 18 months about his divorce., saying bye to his friends & knowing noone with the connection would have just made him blue.
Also i know they needed the boat & the booze to take into the hole, however why then not just send them on there way, you know they arent going to join you in the hole. ITs counter productive, it really is. Get the bits you need from someone that you know is going to join you.
Imagine if to save the world you have to do a 13h walk would you, turns out no Matt Damon. He bloody leaves it late to realise that he should have stayed & yes we know everything goes wrong in his life & this is the final one so then he can find happiness but still.
The explosion to seal it shut is funny tho.
& then the end where they are just going around helping everyone is lovely, it proves that life does just go on no matter who you are, we are all in the circle of life & should find happiness in the little things.
Ive just realised i sound pretty negative in this review, but i still really like this film & really enjoy it. ITs one of those that isnt a go to but when you watch it you do laugh & smile & you do think about life & what makes you & others happy & think about what we are doing to the world.
Its long too so i understand why people arent interested in seeing this but if you want something life affirming which at the end of it you just go ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh at, then this is the film for you.
