im gonna say spoilers & heres why…
I’ve never seen this film in its entity before, im so sorry. The first one i ever saw in full was 6 in the cinema so ive decided to binge the lot in one go lets do this people. Parents are up for it as well. So i am going to do what i did for the Nolan Dark Knight films & review them all in one big epic blog. I have already properly reviewed Fallout on here previously so you can go back & look at that one. so lets do this & get typing, you never know this review maybe done by the time number 7 comes out. Also if ive only reviewed a few reviews from Space Jam Onwards its because im going back to keep adding each one of these films in.
Lets Just before we get to properly reviewing these films, talk about how good Tom Cruise is in all of these & how he & his character Ethan Hunt have grown through the films. You just sit there & think oh wow yeah theres a lot to this in here & hes just nailing it. I mean the Tom Cruise run from these films & him is now so iconic, that you do just think when people run have they gone to the Tom Crusie school of running. The man is on fire on every single one & the fact that he is still doing his own stunts now at this age & they are madder than what he did at the start, is crazy. I mean we’ve all seen the previews of whats happening in 7, its madness. The man knows no boundary’s & is willing to do it all to make it so authentic. It really does make you sit on the edge of your seat going oh fuck. & That is what these films should do.
I will do one big large sum up at the end people so we just go from film to film here.
178 Mission Impossible
The cast for this film to just have small roles in it or to be introduced half way through is phenomenal. The names keep coming & its just oh wow. IT really does set you up for the thing we all now know about these films. Doesnt matter how big a star you are, you have a huge chance of dyeing in a mission impossible film & i love them for doing that & setting the tone quiet early.
I love now know how all the tech works in the most recent one, of seeing how it started 2 decades earlier & how we have all now moved forward & how the technology has changed & is just so much more cutting edge.
The Euro star part of this film with the helicopter escape was one of the most expensive set pieces of all time when they made this. I mean you look at it now & you just think oh god that would look so much more realistic now, but for then thats epic & you just go with it. I mean id never be able to go to france to go wine shopping but hey Brexit & Covid have stopped that so.
I like the fact the Luther is introduced & at this point we have no idea how much of a huge part he will be going forward in these film ( even the one hes not technically in). But when you see his character even though he is a bit untrustworthy you do warm to him & want to be on his side.
The glasses are amazing, i want them now.
London looks so different then okay yes they pick & choose but still compare some of those bit to number 6 its a different city they are in right?
Are all these flight attendants in on it all these mission or do BA just hire agents as stewards.
The highlight of the film is the wire fall & vault scene. It still holds up today & is one of the most iconic bits of modern cinema & visual effect ever & you sit there (know that hes got 5 more films to come) going oh god is he getting out of this alive. You do sit & every little mistake & the silence & the whiteness of it all, it does what cinema is made to do, to put you on the edge of your seat each time you watch it & have a response back. Brilliant. I will never ever get tired of watching this scene.
179 Mission Impossible II
lets start by being honest here, this was the one i enjoyed the least. It was clear they made it just to be a follow up & for the money & no other reason & know now that ive seen the next ones & what happens & how the franchise grows from this point, its the low point for the franchise it really is.
I mean thats not to say some of it is bloody good fun. A trip to Australia is always a good start with any film. & the start of the film with that random plane crash & what goes on is stupid but brilliant. You do sit there & go oh wow thats how we are starting is it. Classic mission. & then its just Tom freeclimbing up that mountain. I was a bit upset that was at the start & not really apart of a mission. I wanted more from it that that. Hugely upsetting thats just his intro.
Ethan is so in love with Nyah in this film & will do anything for her, so much so that hes almost willing to let the world die of a plague to save her at points. & then it makes no sense that in the next one shes not even acknowledged or like she broke his heart so he found Julia… after building it up to be such a huge deal, to then get rid of it moving forward just felt a little bit of a missed opportunity if im honest.
Nota very good bad guy, im sorry but he was just bland & british & generic for the time period & you sat there watching him going well, you die obviously however put a bit more effort in mate come on. I mean putting on Ethan’s masks were clever, but other than that he was predictable.
A Glesson turning up is always good. & the gassing & what they put him though was epic & fun to watch.
Getting into the lab was cool but it was just kinda a rerun from the first film. At no point did i feel concerned about that decent & getting in & what was going to go down (apart from with Luther). It just had a lowkey film that the first, like it felt it had to do that.
For someone who was going to kill herself she took her time didnt she ( i know clicking countdown clocks in film hardly ever run on time but still. Do it love.
After everything that happens to get the serum & the chase & the bombs & smoke & killing the wrong guy the final fight does feel like a let down if im honest. After that epic build that oh yes this is going to be a super cool end, it was just a standard fight. I didnt like that im sorry but i didnt.
This isnt a bad film, dont get me wrong, i still enjoyed it, but it is the weakest of the 6. Im glad they have moved forward the way they have & that its now more coherent moving from film to film.
180 Mission Impossible III
We get a proper villain yaya yaya yayayayyy at last. Someone to really get our teeth into. PSH (much easier than typing his whole name out) brings pure evil & just makes it horrendous & you just sit there watching what hes doing & you are seeing it & thinking oh hes going to be bad & we are going to have him here for a while, which is why its a shame that hes then killed off as he was someone i brought into. I like the fact the film starts off with the third act before going to the beginning.
Going back to the whole last film he was in love & now hes marrying someone else, wasnt very coherent, but i love Julia. Shes brilliant & she is the star of the film, from going from just a normal every day person to being the hero & helping him in the end after going through all that trauma.
The mid 00s were the time & era for spy films where people didnt know they were spies werent they. & there re so many times he could tell her or that she could have worked it out. I mean especially when he marries her at the hospital the perfect time to tell her. but nah he doesnt.
The whole bit in the Vatican & Rome is amazing. Its a fantastic set piece & you just wonder how the hell its all going to happen & go down & its just one of those where there are constant oh go this isnt going to work moments. & thats what makes it so good.
I like the fact at the first rescue when they try to get agent back they almost do it & you do actually think yes thats brilliant & then dead. Thats how quick these films can turn on themselves & thats what makes a film a mission film.
We meet Benji at last & he never leaves, so happy Simon Pegg started off with such a small role & now is such an integral part to the mission team.
I know its a spy film & they do need to go round the world to suddenly go to Shanghai was a little okay & then to not actually see the main mission there was a little like hang on we arent actually seeing this, just the start & the after math… felt a bit short changed with that.
The stealing from the bridge was brilliant. I really liked that.
Rhys Meyers obviously was meant to be in these films for a lot longer hes a really good supporting character in this & then in the next one hes not. Shame for him, & everything that then happened.
The end when he fesses up & she has to save him & kill all those bad guys was amazing. Proper girl power moment of joy & amazement. I understand why he had to walk into the sunset with her at the IMF too, but the fact that we have now carried on with these films going forward does make that ending feel a bit like yea this doesnt work out people.
I think this is probably the best stand alone out of the originals. ITs techy enough but doesnt lose any of its core mission values & you can just watch this without knowing anything about the IMF & thats what makes it a really really good film.
181 Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol
Or as i like to call it the one without Luther until the very very end. I thought he had been killed off too so was very happy when he appeared at the end. A Mission Impossible film is like Paddington with no Marmalade references.
Im glad this one was far enough away but then still linked to the last film. He gave up everything to be with Julia so by telling you she was dead throughout for then the pay off at the end for her to be living a normal life was lovely. A Proper oh yes moment as after the shit she went through in the last film we wanted her to still be alive.
I like the fact we start with a prison break out of Hunt which just seems like a standard action film intro at this point but i love the fact its so important to later on in the film but you just dont know it yet. Very clever movie.
The screen in the Kemlin to make it look like noones there while they break into it is brilliant & i love the Benji is now a field agent but hes so crap at it. Perfect Pegg. But yeah there Tech to get into it is brilliant & then he almost basically walks out the front door before it all goes bang.
One of the worst jobs in film has to be being in charge of the IMF surly you dont have a long shelf life. One film if your lucky. If your ever offered the job say nah you want to be an agent instead.
I love how Hunt is like i dont care & Jeremey Renner Brandt is like such a stickler for the rules. Okay he has his own guilt trip that he thinks hes responsible for Julias death, but still. Its ying & yang & it works. Also when he has to kick arse he does, i mean youve got an avenger here, you need him to take out some people dont you.
Blue = Glue
Red = Dead
perfect
I mean when he is climbing that building its brilliant. It really is & the fact the hes actually did that is incredible. Tom does need to stop one day otherwise he will do more than just breaking his ankle like he does in 6.
I like the whole dont kick her out of the window & then she just is that brilliant. I mean whos going to want to stay in that hotel now, no widow lots of blood & bodies & the sands inside it. I understood why they had the sandstorm, but to have it for so long during such a long chase scene did make me angry i was looking at it going so why are we still doing this. It infuriated me.
I understand we had to have the race against time to stop that nuclear bomb with a not very good bad guy, but the lift fight was crap. The best bit of the end play out was trying to get all the stuff done at the party. It just felt like they were drawing out something that could have been so much more epic & know how good the ending can be to these films, it let me down a little. Although i did like the fact he kept hitting the off button going mission accomplished.
Maybe there was a reason there as no Luther in it as its a bit average. Dont get me wrong the stunts are epic but we never reach any more cool after the Kermlin & any more wow after he climbs the building. I still really enjoyed it though… especially when the last words of the film are about the syndicate…
182 Mission Impossible Rogue Nation
& here we go the last one of the 5 ekkk cant believe we are actually here.
I love how the last words from number 4 which you just throw away are just the base of this film. So clever & the syndicate are such a cool & smart organisation & you kinda want them to succeed ish. Well you like the plans they come up with. I also like the fact that the leader Soloman Lane doesnt get his hands dirty until he has to. Hes brilliant. Sean Harris is an amazing bad guy hes so cold its spine chilling.
Rebecca Fergusons Ilsa is a brilliant addition & shes so much more than just a double crossing doubler crosser who gets double crossed by everyone. Kept up with that. Shes not just there to look good in the dress. She really could take them all out if she wanted to. & when she has her vulnerable moments its brilliant because it proves these trained assassins do have a heart & are human after all.
I love how Ethan is trapped at the start of the film by Lane is how they capture him at the end. I love symmetry like that it always makes me think they have really felt about it.
Alec Baldwin not being head of the IMF but then in theory being the head of them & then getting the job at the end is brilliant. He is the perfect person to be against them but also understand that its right at the same time.
Benji wins yay (not) i mean going to the theatre is lush but then almost being blown up not so. I love how Ethan really was willing to let everyone blow up so he could save his friend. Thats proper friendship goals. Also there is no restaurant like that by the Tower of London. He will get to wear a mask one day. Thats all Benji wants.
Tom Hollander turns up as our PM whoop is is bad i trust him more than what we currently have to run the country. Thats saying a lot i know but at least you know what your getting. That whole interrogation at the auction is brilliant.
The water card swap is bloody tense & i do genuinely sit there when i see that scene going oh crap he is dead, he is really really dead so its so epic when hes saved. & then the chase that happens afterward is amazing & how many sub chases there are to it as well. Thats peak mission impossible just one thing leading to another & just when you think it cant be ramped up with anymore tension it is. Its brilliant. You need the little lull afterwards after those 20mins of madness. Oh & they the just happen to bump into Luther & Brandt.
Im 20mins into writing about number 5 & ive just realised ive not addressed the opening of the film, when he is hanging off the plane. Tom Cruise is hanging off a fucking plane & trying to get into it. That opens the film. Thats madness. That just like thats your opening what do you have for me next film. You cant get crazier than that, which it doesnt but it just sets you up for the epic ride you are about to have.
I really like this one its one of the least stand alone out of them all but we meet enough new people that if youve not been here before you arent like the hell is going on. Its just stylish & cool & is at the correct tempo & you do genuinely sit there & go oh wow that stunning how have they done that. ITs just a joy to watch & when its over your like oh man.
& just to complete the set here is the link to number 6 Mission Impossible Fallout
& that is it. They are all typed up & breath Emily breath, those fingers need a rest. I have no idea how many weeks its taken me to type it all up hang on 2 seconds… 5 of April i asked did you want it as one or five so over a month to do this. So worth it. Ive enjoyed living back thought them all too. I might have to binge set of films again soon one after the other, so then its all current & in my mind. maybe Bourne that was the first time i did this…. Any how im digressing. I am so glad we binged them all in one go & they are so much fun. There are those that are good some which are meh & some that you think really but looking at when it was made you can see why. I am so looking forward to number 7 & 8 as it just seems to have got better with time . Tom Cruise i once said i was worried you were losing you magic… i take that back sir.
This 5 film review if you have got this far is your Mission Accomplished. Ethan Hunt is epic.
