Its raining, its february, its an fa cup weekend where we havent got a game & the next big match isnt on till 5pm, so im putting on Robin Hood (the new one) for my monthly Ben Mendelsohn being a bad guy fix. Not too much to ask right. Lets see if it was as good as i said it was first time round, as it turned out no one agreed with me, but turns out your all read my cinema club review which you can find here…(keep the views up my lovelies).

We all know the story of Robin Hood but this ones gone all peaky blinders & dark & mysterious. Exactly what an update for 2018 needs, more ewww more grit & just using technology to sell it.

Im gonna moan first about it then go omg…. Its set up for a sequel… a sequel we will never get as no one except me enjoyed it & no one but me actually went to see it or buy it. I have stuff i want to ask & explore but no we wont get one, & that is a huge shame. It obviously thought like i did that it would lead to a franchise & control cinema going forward, but it failed to meet the hype. So all my fascination as to what will happen next will never be matched.

Right moan over… Lets go loving praise now…

Tim Minchin… One of my Heros… It is really hard to watch him and not think “Fuck i love Boobs tho” or “you dont eat pigs” but once you are over that after the 3rd time hes on screen, the man is brilliant & Friar Tuck. Hes the narrator too which is just perfect. I love the fact hes very ditsy too & is all like oh my bad my bad. Hes brilliant.

Taron is on form too, really good he just oozes a modern Robin & is exactly what you want. You just sit there going the guy is now a fully fledged leading man & he is the future of british cinema. His chemistry with Eve Hawson only works at the end of the film if im honest, as most of the first part of the film he just spins here around. That being said Eve & Jamies chemistry isnt good either, maybe its here.

Time to talk Ben… I mean after all a hero is only as good as its villain. I mean its not Rickman as the Sheriff, & its not Bens best bad guy work, but oh i really wanted to punch him a few times watching this & just tell him where to go. When hes trying to Kill Tim im like nah your mates in real life dont do it & his psychological torture of Foxx is good too. HE does get a very fitting send off & dies horrifically though, however if it was to bring a sequel hed be much better than Jamie.

Jamie Dornan just smulders throughout, im happy with that. He is moody enough to be his character, but i dont think he will be a good baddie going forward. It was very obvious he wasnt going to get the people to rise up with him & he would have too much to lose.

I like the crusades hundreds of bows & arrows, that is bloody cool. the Rapid fire the jumping all over the place. IT felt more like the assassin’s creed film we should have gotten before. IT just worked. If they were going to properly do Robin Hood as a franchise, hy not just do the first film as the crusades & have it end with Robin arriving back in England finding out his lifes gone & hes threatening revenge. That would of been good.

Robins disguise wasnt very good was it with the scarf. I understand the meaning of it being Jamie Foxxs son, but it kept slipping down how did less people work out it was him. I mean the chase through the mines its almost down the entire time. I mean that chase & everything going on there is bloody good & as far as a set piece is its the best one of the film. The robbery of the treasury is good too.

Every film needs a montage, & Robin Hood is no different. His training one isnt the best but fits in the story quiet well & moves it along at a good pace rather than just for the sake of it.

Im gonna boil you in your own piss, is a bloody brilliant & disturbing line & Ben just nails it. Thats his pure villain moment.

Robin Hood always has to have the church involved i completely understand, but the church is a very random & only occasional thing in this one. It chooses to use it when it wants to, so much so that there are some points when you completely forget about it.

I like that Robin decides to put a bounty on his head too, to gain the trust all those trust worthy meeting are bloody good, but you can all see that everyones trying to work out that someones got an ulterior motive to them, because you are in on all there gossip & plans, leaving one out of it would of helped more & added a little suspense.

I really enjoy this film. Its a good action popcorn film to watch which just makes you sit there & think oh yes im watching a hollywood blockbuster (i know it made no money & was panned). But i still really really like it.

It also has one of the best posters in the history of cinema ( see the original cinema club review).

Basically i think you should all watch it & enjoy the ride of it all for the 2 hours. I enjoy it & think its bloody good fun, & i hope you do too.
