Popcorn Synopsis for you all & then i will get nerdy before i actually review the film for you so please bear with peoples.
2005, Norwich. Little Saraya is fighting with her brother as she doesnt want to watch the wwf wrestling as its all the family talk about. Her parents encourage her to beat up her brother to escape his clutches & ask her if she will join there wrestling show for one night. Many years later Saraya & Zak her brother are now the main stars of the familys wrestling company & are busy training up kid & teenagers so they stay out of trouble. Zak & Saraya after many attempts eventually get a phone call from the wwe (which had to drop the name wwf due to the pandas) to come for tryouts in london, at the same time Zak & his girlfriends find out they are going to have a baby. Saraya & Zak go & take part in the try outs & also meet the Rock back stage as the WWE live shows are in london at the same time. Out of all of the hopefuls Saraya, who is going by the wrestling name Paige, gets invited to go to florida to train, but noone else is. After initially refusing to go unless her brother comes as well, she changes her mind & goes realising it will help bring some notoriety to the familys business.
Upon arriving in florida she meets some of the other female wrestlers (divas) who are trying out for WWE but Paige realises they have little wrestling experience & are either models or cheerleaders or dancers, so when she trys to properly wrestle them it becomes a struggle. They also destroy her at doing Promos, & is heckled out the building. Realising she doesnt fit in she trys to make herself look like the other Divas. This fails & she also cant compete the last obstacle course before christmas. Before she goes home the main trainer Morgan tells Paige that her brother would never have made it in WWE & would just be there to make the big guys & super stars look better. Upon returning she tells Zak that shes not going to go back to florida. Zak who has been depressed since failing to get into WWE lashes out at her & beats her in a match she was meant to win after the published they had a wwe star on there new years wrestling card, Zak then also tells there parents about her quitting & gets in a bar fight. Paige realises that she has to tell him what morgan said to try & tell him that hes doing more good at home for wrestling then he ever would in the wwe. Zak then starts to put his life back together & goes back to training the kids to wrestle & take more responsibility with his son & wife. He even starts teaching a blind kid to wrestle.Paige returns to florida much to everyones surprise & back to being the goth she is & starts to train the fellow divas in how to wrestle in return she makes friendships, gets better at promos & even does a double suicide dive & fall with them.
Morgan takes everyone to wrestlemania where the rock is waiting for Paige. HE calls her family who hang up on him at first but then when he tells them that Paige is going to be on WWE tv the following night on the main show they freak out. Paige thanks for rock for always keeping tabs on her, but says it wasnt his choice. He then mentions that Morgan made him the star he was by being thrown of a steel cage, referring back to the story that Morgan had earlier told Paige that she passed on to Zak. Before her match on the post mania Raw Zak calls Paige to say that he is jealous of her but that he is the proudest brother in the world & to go be a star. She walks out to the ring to face the Divas champion AJ Lee but initially freezes. AJ puts her title on the line & the two fight with Paige eventually winning by using one of Zaks finishing move that noone had seen before & becomes the youngest ever Divas champion in her first match. She wins over the crowd & the critics & the rest of the locker room giving a heartfelt speech saying that the WWE is her house now & everyone back home in Norwich goes crazy. The other Divas Paige trained celebrate with her as she stares down the camera back to her brother in Norwich who is next to the photo of them when they were both kids learning how to fight. The film ends by stating that Paige is still the youngest female wrestling champion in the world & lead the way for the Divas revolution in the WWE which eventually lead to them headlining wrestlemania, & that Zak still teaches people to wrestle including that blind guy who is now a uk wrestling champion.
okay now im going to get nerdy
As a kid i would watch wwe before i went to school & on a friday night when my parents would let me stay up to see it. This is why i always freak out when i see the rock being such a huge deal. One of the guys who was one of my childhood heros is seriously being considered as a future president & is just the coolest guy in the world & he used to hit people with chairs. As an adult if its on i might watch 5mins or so of it now & then, but at the moment with us brits being so good & being top of the tree or nearly there right now its hard to ignore. Also when you have the likes of AJ Styles being the GOAT, its hard not to. Paige really did change the way people saw womens wrestling & it took her 3 years to do it, but without her women wrestling wouldnt be as high profile as it currently is & we need to celebrate the fact that she was brave enough to go no that needs to happen. Shes one of our own & we should embrace her for all her faults.
Right lets do this then.
Florence Pugh gives one of the greatest performances ever as the little goth girl from Norwich who went on to change the world. Its so inspiring & amazing. She actually had to go to wrestling school, to learn to fall & hit people properly, more than just acting stunt school. She had to train with some of the NXT people & learn her craft to make it look believable. & if thats not enough to make you realise what she did for the roll, there are times i am watching it & i forget its not actually Paige. Its one of those performances where you sit there & go wow. Florence is the future of acting.
We then also need to have a huge shout out to Jack Lowden, who plays her brother. HE properly has to go through every single emotion in this film & go through the despair of watching his little sister go out there to live his dream when he keeps getting knocked back is heartbreaking. You completely see where its all coming from & understand.
There phone call before her match on raw is absolutely amazing. Im not sure if this did happen in real life (we will get to some of the jazzing up for a film later on) but i really hope that they did have that conversation before her match against AJ. It didnt matter that thousands of people were going to be cheering her name, her brother was all she needed in the world. Everything always comes back to family.
As ive mentioned JAzzing up for the film, there are some inaccuracy. First of all the Rock didnt meet her at her try outs or be the person to break the news that she was going to be fighting for the title on her debut, he first met her to discus turning her document into a film. Also Vince Vaughn’s character isnt a specific person hes a mixture of various trainers. Paige also was the first ever womens NXT champion & had wrestled more in the wwe than the film had made out & finally she didnt freeze when speaking to AJ before her match she congratulated her on being the best first & then AJ starts having a go back. It makes a better story if she freezes tho.
Underdog storys usually arent about little goth girls from Norwich becoming the face of a global corporation in a few months. Its also usually done for love & a man or for something else, but this film just goes for the fact that she had ambition & went for it & gets over the ups & downs is just so inspiring.
I love the fact that it properly mentions about WWEs past & how they hire models & the bullying & the judging that goes on & how you dont necessarily make it even if youve got the talent.
We need to talk about the Rocks its doesnt matter speech & the fact that its just so frustrating for him to get away from them. It’s brilliant. My parents properly were laughing at it, thinking about the nostalig 90s & how that was cool & breakign the glass celling.I love the fact we get a IF YOU SMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAA WHAT THE ROCK IS COOKING! too.
Cameos are cool too. Pete Dunn in the london tryouts who doesnt get in but when the film was released was the UK champion, Sheamus & Big Show eating food at wrestlemania, John Cena & Raw & Zelina Vega portraying AJ Lee . I mean i know the rocks cool but we needed some other people to be in it too & it just makes it feel real & like it did actually happen.
Stephen MErchants face looking at WWE is amazing, especially when his wife gets properly into it as well. I love that everyones round theres for the match at like 1 am in the morning the day after wrestlemania thats so cool.
Obviously im bias in thinking this is good film. Ive seen the documentary now, i know what Paige’s Story is. therefore im going to tell you about a conversation i had with some friends a few months ago. The film was on netflix & some of them watched it with out me, who had no prior WWE knowledge. So when i next met up with them i asked what they had seen recently & they told me about the film & were all going omg its amazing, & then i told them that 85% of the film is accurate to real life & filled them in & they were all going wow, & then have watched it again knowing now what they know. If thats not enough to make you watch it i dont know what will.
Seriously go & watch this film people, i recommend the documentary & a little bit of homework before you do to fully enjoy it,but if not you will still love it. It genuinely makes me want to yell at people Hit em with the CHAIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
Perfect british underdog story. Paige what are you doing???? Your being an inspiration & starting a revolution.
