Popcorn Synopsis for you all
In 1995 Vers wakes up with bad dreams & in order to get over them heads to training with her mentor Jon Rogg, on Hala the capital of the Kree. After meeting the leader of the Kree race, who takes the form of the person they admire the most, Vers doesn’t recall hers. She is sent on a mission to find the Skrulls with other Kree operatives. The Skrulls shape shift & gain some recent memory of who they turn into. Their leader Talos turns into the Kree person they were trying to save & take Vers captive.
They go through her memories, which Vers has no recollection of & a fight ensues & she & the Skrulls crash onto C53 (Earth). Agents Fury, Coulson & Keller have been sent to investigate, as apart of Shield, but a Skrull has tracked Vers down & a race on a train insues. Fury also meets a Skrull pretending to be Coulson & has a car accident, killing the Skrull. Fury reports this to his boss Keller, during the autopsy, but it turns out that Keller is also a Talos the leader of the Skrulls. Fury tracks Vers down to a bar from her memories & they test each other to see whos human or not.
Vers & Fury go to Pegasus which is a aircraft hanger & are not allowed any further. After they break out & meet a cat, called goose, they realise the Skrulls want a light speed engine created at pegasus. The engine exploded & took out its owner lawson, who Vers saw in the flash back & see as the leader of the Kree & she realises she used to live here. Keller is the revealed as a Skrull & Vers takes him out to save Fury & they fly off to her former best friends, with goose as a stowaway. Upon going to her best friends they call Carol Denvers & start to help her piece her former life back together, before Talos turns up. Talos has the black box from Lawsons crash for the light speed engine they need & playing the recording triggering Vers memories, which were her previous nightmares. Turns out Lawson was Kree but wanted to save the Skrulls & it was Jon Rogg who killed her & blowing up the engine transferred its power to Vers. Vers has a shouting match with Talos, but it is her friend Maria that brings her back to her senses & reverts back to being Carol.
After realising the info the Skrulls need is in space, Carol, Fury, Maria, Talos & Goose go to the space ship & find the core which is the tesseract, the space infinity stone captain america had previously dropped in the ice. But thats not why Talos is there, a group of Skrulls are living on the ship including his wife & daughter who he has never met. The Kree & Jon Rogg, who know Carol now knows who she is, arrive & takes the Skrulls & Carol hostage.
Carol meets the Kree leader again, who is mocked for only being human, but Carol knowing that shes human, uses this against the kree & unleashes her full power & save Fury & Maria before they are blow into space. Fury & Maria head off to find the Skrulls with Goose, who turns out to be a flerken & eats the tesseract & some Kree warriors. However one of them he doesnt, turns out its Talos & he is doing a double cross to save his family.
Carol fights off the kree, but not before one can shoot Talos. Talos & Fury afirm there friendship before flying away & killing one Skrull ship. Jon Rogg is about to shoot them down, but Carol knowing she can now fly takes him out, just as the rest of the Kree fleet including Ronan turn up to destroy earth due to the Skrull invasion. Carol destroys there nuclear warheads & blows up one of their ships. Ronan promises to come back to take Carol as his own. Carol then beats Jon Rogg & send him back to Hala with a message that she will end the war. Carol then agrees to help find Talos & the Skrulls a new home planet, safe from the Kree. Before she leaves to fly them in Lawsons ship, she gives Fury back his pager, which she confiscated off him earlier for getting them caught, saying for emergencies only, she also says goodbye to Maria.
Fury now back at shield, decides the world needs more heroes & decides to take Carols nickname & start something called the avenger initiative. Goose is sick & throws up the tesseract.
in 2018 Furys pager glitches out, which he used as he snapped. Black Widow & Captain America who are looking at the worlds population collapsing, demand the signal be resent. When the two of them Bannar & Rhoades turn around, Carol is standing there, unaged almost 25 years later, demanding to know where Nick Fury is.
oh i went into a lot of detail there, i cant help it shes gonna save the world.
When this film came out i was hyped for it being another Marvel film & to fill the gap before Endgame. It was high on my list because of who was in it but i had no their loyalty to it at all. This film is now a contender for my favourite films of all time. & it so deserves it.
Brie has had a lots of criticism for playing Carol straight & down to earth & with no emotion to start with, but i so think that works. Kree have no emotions, they are not nice people at all & can jog on. So its only after all of her memories are triggered that she becomes a full rounded character, which is what i love about it. That is what she was brain washed to do, to hide it all so that when it all comes out it really comes out.
When Maria gives that speech to her to say who she really is to her & that none of it matter because she is still her best friend, that really get me. It is the best bit of the film. It really is. From the walking out of the hut to start arguing with Talos & then to end up in tears realising that she is human & its okay to let it all go, thats the moment. IT is one of the most honest & true moments of cinema. Sometime you do need your best friend to give you a pep talk & to connect with your emotions & its the fact that she still points out her flaws but in the best way possible because it makes her who she really is. Seriously find me a more truthful bit in any MCU film to match real life, that is the moment. Maybe Peggy in bed in winter soldier is with that when shes got dementia, but its just brilliant & makes me feel really emotional watching it. I am a strong independent woman & when i watch that scene i generally feel inspire & like i can take on the world, no matter how down i have felt for the rest of the day.
But this is the whole point of this film. So many female lead films they do it for love, or for a man. No she isnt doing it. Shes doing it for the right reasons. She doesnt need a love story or sex thrown throughout this. She is doing it for herself & because she can. Anyone who doesnt find that inspiring obviously isnt the demographic for this movie, & i feel so sorry that you cant all feel it the way i do about this movie.
Can we talk about Ben actually playing a good guy please. Oh that fills me with joy. Even under all that make up & prosthetics. He proven he can do it & not just be evil. I love how it sets him up to be the baddie too, but nah its the other way round. All he wanted to do was see his family & hold them & get them home, whats not more human than that. Its also brilliant that he takes the piss out of himself & his beautiful blue eyes (check them when you next watch they are beautiful, not Murphy beautiful but close).
Was it something i said is one of the things i quoted most of all this year i recon, due to the Talos Fury fight where she then blows the hell out of Talos. Its brilliant, they do both properly go for it & i just watch that 2minutes going heheheheheheh shes gonna hit you mate. & the whole glasses complete the bad guy look that’s cool.
Lets also talk Goose the cat (Flerken) who first watching steals the show & then in follow ups is light relief. Love that cat. Love that hes also the last thing Fury trust & he loses his eye over it. Whats also funny (sorry nerd alert) is the Larson is apparently allergic to cats & Jackson doesnt like them. The only person to be a cat person on set, youve guessed it, Mendelsohn. Yep Talos is a cat person & has to spend the whole film try to be freaked out by it & not touching it. I also love that when hes scanned to prove hes a Flerken, he actually mimics the actor with his paw on his own. Thats so sweet. Bane Kitty is very cute. We have a Goose cat on our road actually, who when i walk past him i always say you Flerken at him & he looks up.
Fury & Carol dinner chat is brilliant & the bit about Toast is very interesting. If its cut diagonally he cant eat it… lets move forward in time to Age of Ultron peoples shall we… hmmmmmm is he… he cant be right… nah im making that up definitely. side eye at those in the know for marvels hiding in plain sight. Any how i digress, all the places hes been also begin with B including Budapest! I want to know what happened in Budapest.
As a girl who grew up listening to 90s music because im a child of the 80s (just {i was born Berlin Wall came down a few days later} 1989) but the no doubt & TLC oh proper vibes there. 1995 was when i really started listening to music & got a tape player. Girl Power with the Spice Girls was about to so be in & yea i adore the films soundtrack.
I love how Fury goes when they get in that plane, due east turn right when you get to mississippi. I know he used to be a spy & knew stuff but you know hows he getting that bang on.
Stan Lees Cameo is the first one in proper MCU since he had died the spider verse one was already done, but this one with the smile on the train & Carols acknowledgment back like yea its you Stan your fine, is perfect. Its a proper tribute. His cameo in Endgame is very small & is a blink & you miss it completely & i like to think that this was the perfect send off for him. Just the smile to his creation & the nodd back.
All the fights & chases are good. From the one on the Skrull ship trying to remove her gloves, to the one on the train & then the grand finale. They are all so on point & so rewatchable & really do fill you with satisfactions. Especially that final showdown with Jon Rogg. Jude Law (who ive not given praise to yet but should & now will) is doing his epic long speech & she just blows him away going shes got nothing to prove to him is spectacular. You know its coming, if youve paid attention to the last 1h39mins you know its happening, but its so worth it. Jude Laws good at playing double crossers isnt he.
The montage of her standing up & proving that shes human & if thats all she is then its good enough, oh goosebumps again. Real yes life affirming moment happening right there. It really is good,so much so that when she takes he clip off her neck you want to stand with her & punch supreme intelligence too.
When she blows up all those Kree battleships & the war heads is a little CGI over the top, but it was needed to prove her power had no end to it & it was unlimited. She had to prove a point to the rest of the MCU that she is the most powerful hero. & then the guys face behind Ronan just going like eh maybe we picked the wrong fight, i love that. & her hand clasping to show her power is just stunning what a beautiful bit that is this the colour.
I love the costume change too with the kid. All the different colours she wears are all the different portrayals of Captain Marvel through out history so it was nice to see that all recognised & not just swept away.
Basically if youve not got it by now this is one of my favourite films, not just of 2019, but of all time. I love how it stands alone in the MCU that you can watch this & its only then end credits & what shield is that will make you go huh, everything is stands alone, but if you have watched the rest it fits in perfectly.
This is now my favourite MCU film & sits very proudly in my top 10 films of all time at number 7. & shes going to be the star of Phase 4 i know it. She really is going to save the world.
