One more cinema trip hell why not, cant go wrong with it this week can we, so im back at my local cinema for one more awards season movie. & this time its Women Talking. Is it going to be what it says on the Tin? hmmmmm lets find out.
The upper balcony of the studio had about 30 people in it, because of the lay out i can never see exactly whos below me which is a bit of a shame. I did once again lower the average of my section of the studio, & im not young anymore.
Trailers exactly the same as the night before, the Son (seen) Missing (Seen) the new Jennifer Saunders film (yes) & Whats love got to do with it (probably depends what else is on that week). oh & the national theatre trailer too. thats the problem with going to see two same age rating films at a local cinema its always going to be the same.
& then the film started… & yes. It genuinely was Women Talking. It did do what it said on the tin.
This whole movie is about consent & lack of it & what it is to have a voice & vote & words as a woman & about some truly graphic horrific rape & abuse stories. & it spends the whole movie talking about this, right for the end of act 3 for that very thing to be thrown in our faces as the audience as the consent they all crave, is taken away by one person for something & it just proves that everyone can be that bad & manipulative. I mean i get that is the message, but i was like no. That character, truly should have understood this. I get the point but it devalues everything discussed for the rest of the film.
Didnt realise it was set when it was actually was set that was big shock, i wasnt expecting that. Im not going to tell you guys because when you find that out its a oh mu god moment, yea i didnt see that coming at all.
Jessie & Rooney were both phenomenal in this film. From there different points of view on this & how they counter act each other but both have respect for what the other has gone through. Claire was also good but isnt at the level of the other two. Shes still only on dimensional in her acting, which does work for this but usually it doesnt. I also dont get the oooh this is a Francis film, she say 4 sentences & then is bloody moody & fucks off. Dont give her such a high billing in this.
Ben was the only man in the film, but served a point that he was the only one that could be trusted out of the men. He was conflicted, but he was very good & its always reassuring to hear that voice, even if he put an accent on.
IT was very grim & dark & uncomfortable to watch at point, but thats the point. You have to watch this, because it does actually happen in the world & its horrible. okay not necessarily to this extent, but it still does & its not very nice at all. But it had to do it to prove a point that they were now s desperate to make this decision.
Im done with films & god being thrown down my throat now. No im not here to go to church, im here to watch a film. ITs a different cathartic experience & your just making it all weird now. Please stop film, please please please. It actually makes me now go nope when that starts.
The supporting cast were all very good especially some of the teenage girl.
Was i meant to care about that old ladies horses? because i did, but she kept referencing back to them. Nah they werent Jenny.
This film has a lot to say & it gets its message across very well & is so well scripted & put together. But i cant forgive it for doing the one thing in the entire film that they talked about relating to consent. Sorry that unforgivable. & it upset me that it did that.
Its also a hard film to recommend due to all the different abuse types. its very triggering.
