Am i back to seeing films to start of my long weekends when theres bank holidays… fuck yes. Its also the last long weekend before we get to christmas, so its time to see something a bit different. It was time to se Theatre Camp & see if its as sweet & fun as the trailer makes it out to be.
Easy to see how many people were in my cinema. This is opening day by the way. the 6:10pm showing. How many? 8. Me & 8 other people were in my screening for this film. Awkward. I was also the youngest person there which is a bit yikes… oh well.
Trailers Jurassic Park? Yea i thought that too. Apparently it back on the big screen at the end of September so thats interesting. Confession ive never seen it in full, so might have to check it out. Also Big Fat Greek wedding 3, Dumb Money (looks so cool) & The Creator (so my cuppa tea).
& then the film started… I was weird but good but also slightly self important, which is a lot of conflicting things to say isnt it. Let me explain…
It was a documentary mockumentary kind of film, but all the people who made the film wanted to make it fun but also wanted to show themselves off so there were points where i was like has this film forgotten what its meant to be. It was still funny & full of love but yea it just wanted to prove a point & at points it made the film suffer a little. It was just like they forgot they were making a comedy film.
As a kid who went to a high school that was all about music & drama (its was my local high school & my parents tried to send me else where) i know all the pressure being on those musical kids & for those of us that didnt get involved at all getting cast aside. So i recognise some of the kids attitudes & how teachers are with them. There was a lot of interesting tropes there.
There was one moment that happens about 15mins into the film which you laugh at & then you completely forget until the end credits happen & it completely pays off. I loved it. I laughed a lot at that. It wasnt even really referenced much through the film maybe once more before the credits but ahhhhhhh i laughed so much. Thats how you pay a joke off it really is.
I get upperty adults but some of those kids from both camps were so upperty (& their parents & teachers) it was just like what the hell is this. Especially when kids didnt get a good role in a play or a dance part, i remember watching my friends having melt downs talking about doing that & moaning for week because someone was only villager number 4 with 3 lines..
As much as i said the long joke worked & there was a few redeeming characters in it, there were just some tangents that either we didnt find out why at the end or that we didnt care enough about to be like oh okay that makes sense. Only 1 person really got what they wanted from it, if im honest & it was pretty clear from the start they were going to be a big part of act 3.
Im glad it ended where it did. It was starting before we got to that performance, that we were nearing the films end. Any more would have just felt long & a bit meh but it knew it had to end when it did.
Some of the songs they made up & some of the classes they took were hilarious. Some were far to serious to try &prove a point(which i get) but others were so good & were really needed.
When Peli (mando) turned up for all of two scenes i was like yessssssssssssss give me the queen. I love here. We didnt have enough of her in season 3, so i was glad when she was in it & stole the show for the few minutes of screen time she had.
It was nice to show that life sometimes doesnt go the way you plan, be it a kid at a show, or someone corporate or someone with a dream. There is always bumps in the road, dont just take it all the granted. Shit happens.
It was fun & i laughed & i think i understood it on a level others dont after going to a high school that specialised in this. It could have been better, but i get that some of its flaws came with the mocumentary & the thing they were filming. Just be a little less serious next time movie.
