Well this has been a busy August of film, fuck a duck. Everything wanted to avoid the big 3 in july & now here i am almost exhausted from them. I am also now very happy i am watching this opening day as it means that i never ever ever have to see the trailer for this again. Its a bit like that McAvoy speak no evil film last year, this is imprinted in my brain now. Anyhow time for the roses.
Well clearly everyone seen the trailer cos its packed for a friday evening. That is very good but still i wasnt expecting this in screen 2. Im impressed.
Trailers, Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Wicked, Downton, & I swear. A proper mixed bag there btu all very much aimed at brits being brits.
& then the film started… ooooh it was so bloody close to getting 5 stars…
Lets get the complaint out of the way… Kate McKinnon… why was she in this movie & why did she decide to perform like that in it. She was the only person that got no laughs from my packed screening & i mean every time. It was so awkward. There were so many other characters that had bit parts that were funnier than her but yea she just brought the entire thing down a notch & if she hadnt been in it i think we could have been looking at a buzzer contender. Its so sad when something like that brings a film down. Its almost like shes acting in a completely different film to everyone else.
Colman & the Cumberbatch had epic chemistry & were so believable as a couple & just made the whole thing work. They really were a delight. They made it feel so real & personal & so funny. Yes you still look at them as who they are but at no point did i ever think it was anything more that two brilliant friends & actors owning every second they were on screen. They bounced off each other so well.
I loved the role reversal, about who brings the money in & who is the home maker & how life isnt all one box fits all. Its amazing. It really works & when it doesnt work its hilarious. Every household has experienced stuff like that, even if you not the one doing but you are the child or friend, you see it all happen.
Are americans going to find this funny? Because there was so much sarcasm & dry or dark humour in this. As brits we lapped it all up, because lets be honest were all a little bit like that.
Shout out to Zendaya!
The supporting cast (except for Kate) own it. Everyone is so good but the legal lawyer scene, where Allison Janney turns up for all of 5 minutes, its fucking incredible & except for the final show down is the best scene in the movie. Its going to stay in my mind for a long long time.
That house… fuck a duck. It was bat shit, but stunning. It did officially make them uperty people (was half expecting Grand Designs & Kevin McAlister to arrive) But wow, it was the stuff of dreams for sure.
Isnt it interesting how california looks like the UK?! (if you know you know)
You know when i sit here & ask for a good rom com maybe every other year yea this is this years for sure. My face hurt from laughing so much & also the room was in bits too. Id say maybe 2 laughs per scene on average, obviously we got a lot more at points but still. It worked.
Yea this could have been a contender for sure, which is a shame, but you will be hard to find a funnier Rom Com this year for sure. When this is on Prime you will all be lapping this up going god that was funny why didnt i see this in the cinema.
