Today is may 3rd, tomorrow is star wars day so its time to go & see the phantom menace on the big screen. Once ive seen this i only have 2 star wars films to go on the big screen. Im so excited ive had my tickets booked for this for a long long time.
It was sold out. They had two 7:30 showings sold out. I felt very proud. The guy who came & sat next to me forgot his glasses & i started chatting to him & his boyfriend. We had fun. Why do i always end up flirting with the gay guys, its not good.
Whats weird is Phantom is a PG so all the trailers were for kids films despite there only being maybe two families with little kids int he screening. they were despicable me, inside out, if & garfield.
& then the film started… its still not my fave star wars movie, but i have a love for it again.
If you click here you can read my full phantom menace review when i watched it on dvd.
The cheer when JarJar turned up was huge. I mean we had all seen it before so it wasnt like it ruined it for anyone, but to sit there & to hear all the kids who were first brought into the Star Wars universe by this appreciate & love him was huge. Also when he appears at the end as part of the delegation who come back to Naboo, so many people did the DiCaprio meme pointing him out. I was with my people. I really was.
The kid is still irritating as Anakin. Im sorry he is. I know we shoudlnt take it out on kids, but he was clearly told to be over excited at so much of it & yes i get that a kid would be, but even when he was being subtle or having important parts of the plot & exposition explained to him he either completed didnt pay attention or zoned out or was far to quick to respond back. Im going to blame bad directing for that.
The ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh when Darth does his double lightsabre & the duel of fates starts… yea the room was filled with it excitement watching that for sure, which is always good. ITs such a good battle too. But why is this huge tech thing underneath the Naboo palace where the government & queen live. ITs a bit weird to have various rooms full of lasers & shiz that you can fall from that also they come across the path of no one else. Why didnt the separatists put people in there? Urgh.
Im sorry Portman is still not a good actress. I thought nah im seeing this on the big screen lets do this & give her the benefit of the doubt… No. Her hints are also so obvious & there are 2 clear points where she isnt the decoy before it is revealed. Shes just wooden.
Qui Gon takes forever to die & doesnt turn into a force ghost straight away. Like hes lying on the floor for a good 5 minutes before Obi Wan does his thing. Also how did he win, he never had the high ground. Also Ewan is so young in this. I mean i know he had been in stuff before & they probably do make him look younger to still be a Padawan, but hes so so young.
The pod race section still is too long. I get that they wanted to show off the skills they had to make it but nah its too long.
Also someone at the senate film said out loud IT WAS BLOODY ET YOUR RIGHT to the person they were sitting with 3 rows in front. I had a laugh at that along with the rest of the room.
So many people left during the credits, which i do often understand especially if youve seen the film before, but before it started it said there will be a treat at the end of the film. We got the first battle scene from the new Star Wars Disney+ show The Acolyte & then the extended trailer after that which over all lasted for about 12 minutes. It looks so so good. I cant wait to see it. As ive delayed typing this up, its actually coming out this week now, its going to rock. Im sure i will obsess over it soon.
There was some bad CGI at points. When you watch a ship land in dune you believe it. In this there were a few awkward landing which hadnt stood the test of time so well for the big screen viewing.
So thats all but 2 star wars films now that ive seen on the big screen at the cinema. It was well worth doing, & im glad i went at the start of the star wars weekend. It made remember how i felt as a little kid watching it for the first time in that conference room & im glad that it was filled with people who grew up like me with the prequels. It was a wonderful experience.
May the forth be with you… revenge of the fifth… this is the May!
