Usually i post a double review for a film i see twice, but i saw Guardians in standard screen on opening day at 5:10 & then the next film i went to see was Guardians in Screen X. So im doing two for the price of one here… i mean the fact ive seen it twice, must give you a good idea about how i felt about the movie, mustn’t it… So here we go lets go be a friken Guardian of the Galaxy shall we.
Opening day was almost sold out. I did see it at a weird time i saw the 5:10 showing, but thats now my preferred time if im honest. I can leave work at 4:30 & walk into the cinema as the trailers starts.
Second viewing was Screen X which is more money, but id say a week later at 5pm (which i had epic traffic for that day) was half full so im very happy with that.
Trailers Oppenheimer (someone actually gasped at the end of it & went oh wow so i think that sold someone) Song Birds & Snakes (yes) The Little Mermaid (yes) Fast X (yes) Indiana Jones(yes) Mission Impossible(yes) & Astroid City (yes). This was across both viewing they werent all at the same one. However cheers cineworld for 5mins worth of adverts & then 15mins of trailers, i much prefer that.
& then the film started… both times… WOW!
No one needs to know how much i cried at this film both times, because damn it. It was a lot an awful lot.
Fuck me that was one hell of an emotional rollercoaster with the guardians on their last outing in the MCU. Every turn or moment they got split up i was like oh no no please, dont you dare James Gunn, i wont accept anything bad that you do. I will fervently reject it. I laughed, i smiled, i felt moved, i was shocked, i was scared, i felt so alone in the world & also with a huge sense of family too.
James Gunn easter eggs i got a few first time round, but i got a few more on a second viewing, including Pete Davidson & his Wife, the second she turned up when i saw her first time around i was very excited she had made it (where was eagly though, i miss that bird). But yea there were so many nods & things o pick up from his other work where you just go yep this is a James Gunn movie. Im so glad they let him come back to make this.
Even in part 3 of the trilogy, we are till character developing. Theres a moment at one point where Gamora cried & that breaks my heart. ITs hard to tell you when because it will ruin it for you, but i felt that. It made her more human & relatable. But everyones development be it small or large was just fantastic to see.
Rockets back story, it was magical & perfect & i loved his gang & it explains exactly why rocket is why he is & its just perfect & even letting that go… oh damn… im welling up thinking about that.
2 credit scenes are very interesting to set up part of the MCU going forward, especially with that tease in the end credit scene too, it was like hang on say what, hows that going to work.
The music as always was completely on point. It was down when it had to be, it mixed the past & modern together well. It just worked & was a vibrant assault on the ears along with the general score at points. The correct drama & the correct style, it just worked so well.
So many farewell movies are made because the studios want the cash grab & the conclusion, but this felt organic & correct & the perfect way to say goodbye. Nothing felt rushed or done for the sake of it. It was true to the guardians & their story it just worked & was right. It wasnt hijacked by the MCU machine. You can still watch all 3 of them as a stand alone, just.
This film has the first Fuck said in the MCU & it was earnt & felt like it was needed at that point & got a huge laugh both times i want to see it. You would after that conversation shout fuck at that person, you just would. Im glad it wasnt wasted.
So the High Evolutionary… what a bastard he is. I havent hated a villain so much in a very long time & after both viewings i wanted him to suffer so badly & to get what was coming to him. Now thats a proper bad guy. I loved him in a bad way. MCU why have you put your main villain faith else where its not good where youve gone with this.
Will Poulter was so good, so good, so many layers to that character, it worked. It had no right to work but it did.
The whole dog thing going through out it was brilliant. I loved it.
A few surprises along the way with guest appearances or planets or references i loved them all.
Gamora being like that so worked & i loved her Arch in this, it proved there was some of her still there but that she was happy & so in the end was everyone else.
2hours 30mins flew by. So much so once we got to act 3 i was like no not already, please no i need more.
The planets & the way its all styled does look like its leapt out of a comic strip. So vibrant & lush, its just magical.
So this is it, this is goodbye to my guardians. If youve been here from the start, you will know what they mean to me. They have always been my comfort. From going to try & see them at the cinema & it being sold out to watching vol1 constantly on sky cinema, to them making me smile & cry. They are the misfits of the MCU & they prove you eventually end up finding your clan & people & that you are okay to grieve & feel lost & alone because at the end of the day it makes you you & you are the best version you can be of yourself. & i now have you guys, my film family, my fandom besties.
I LOVE YOU GUYS!
WE ARE GROOT!
Yea if youve not already guessed it, i bloody loved & adored this film & i think we should mention the guardians trilogy up there with the God Father & Dark Knight Trilogy’s as one of the greatest trilogy’s of all time.
This is 1000000% a golden buzzer contender for 2023, & if its not near the top at the end of the year i will be shocked.
PERFECT
THANK YOU JAMES!
