We are now well on our way to completing the 100 cinema club this is film 81, im bossing it. I really wont be surprised when my stats come back for the year to say horror was my thing & seeing this the crow, might be what pushes it to the next genre.
My thursday 6pm screening had about 30 people in it. Lots of much older people too. Like some pensioner. It wa a mix between people in their 60s & people like me in their 30s.
Trailers, Sing Sing (which after months of adverts my cinema isnt showing this week wtaf) Speak no evil, The critic, never let go, AfrAId & the new Ronan film, i cant remember what its called but it looks good (quick google later the Outrun)
& then the film started… well theres action films & then theres this… in a meh way.
This film was saved by one scene. There as a scene that happens at the opera & its very much done in a John Wick style. This scene works & is cool & is a lush show down in act 3. It slaps. But its what youd expect in act 2 of John Wick for sure. It doesnt meet anything close before that & then the final show down is nowhere near as good as this scene. It got this moment & went wooohoo we created something cool lets now not bother.
FKA Twigs is mentioned a few times that shes an artist & creator in this film. But her character is servery under developed & she isnt utilised well for the screen time that she has. IT was like they wanted to show her off & then went (if youve seen the trailer or know anything about this film its not a spoiler) & killed her off at the end of act 1. Like what the hell.
Bill was good when he was pulling that menacing face & looking confused by exposition we needed by characters we didnt care about which he wasnt bothered about. & then the exposition wasnt that clear either. Hes got a future, but he need to find the right acting project for sure, to really get his teeth into. That coat did look good on him though.
We met a few to many people along the way who were either angels or devils but not explained, or were they henchmen & why did this one guy have all the power & how did he get Power & would it be so easy to get the other power. It was just a miss mash of oooh are the helpful evil or is it just a waste of time.
The Ending?! Does that mean that the previous hour not happen? Was it all in their head? Was there a reset or a glitch? It made no sense. I get the love makes people do crazy things, but that was the ultimate what the hell.
I love that they threw crows in to remind you that its called the crow & crows carry you to the after life. It didnt always follow or lead him to where he wanted to go. & there were a couple that were bad (not as bad as CGI dragons but still).
If it was that easy to break out of that institution, why didnt he try that before? I know i know plot, but still. Also that whole institute was a bit weird too. Like people were in there for all sorts of things. It was like arkhem for the random people that cant go there.
Is it now a thing in movies that everyone has large houses or places they can just crash & no one bat an eyelid or ask questions at all? Its becoming an irritating thing that i have no time for in films now. ITs not good.
The script was lacklustre. I think i could have written better than that, which is either saying a lot or im putting myself down (im actually going the latter i dont do self praise).
The slow mo bits with the water was cool the first time for a visual, but after that, it then just got boring. Much like with Michael Bay getting drones, it was like they went ahh we can make this look cool lets do it for almost every single transition now.
The shouldnt have marketed this as a remake of the crow. Ive never seen the original, but i know its cult status (i tried to find it but couldnt). This should have just been marketed as a dark super hero or super natural film & people would have seen it.
It could have been so much better, but it just felt lazy at times. It was hanging off the originals cult name but in the end of the day, people who adore the first will go well this destroys its name. A few good grim bits in it, but it was just average, which is being nice to it.
