Putting Horror films on at the perfect time after finishing work is really good. You dont go to bed still going wtaf. So the Black Phone being on at 6:10pm is perfect. A brilliant way for me to start my long weekend before i head off to good wood tomorrow. Happy days.
Theres not that many people here id say theres about 20. 2 people have come & sat a seat away from me & ive had a chat (they are about my age). I said i was hiding behind my coffee order & they went oh we love horror good luck (by the way they jumped like i did through the film) & then aske me what my coffee was, so instead of saying it was a Pedro Pascal i explained it in standard terms to them for the girl out of the couple to say to me ahh this is the way. Her boyfriend looked very confused at us both but we both knew. we stopped chatting then as the trailers ended & the film started & they got up & left before i could ask for their names, which is a shame. So if you were the woman at Cineworld talking coffee at 6:20pm on 23 June please get in touch, theres a huge chance you are reading this review.
Trailers NOPE (YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS cant wait) Elvis (Sunday), Bullet Train (yes) & i cant remember the other one thats when i started chatting to them, it was horror related tho.
& then the film started… & there were some proper ahhhhhhhhhhhh moments in this despite it being a predictableish horror.
So i did jump or go ah 4 maybe 5 times (so did the couple next to me). I know you can work out with horror films when its coming but there are some points when you just dont expect it & you go oh fuck this, scaring me to death. This is why i go see horror at a half decent time peoples not 9pm at night.
Now ive not watched MoonKnight yet (disney plus is returning soon tho) & ive not see much of Ethan Hawkes acting work in my life, but i know people who have seen his work are saying this is up there with the best. So did i just go & pick the right film to go & watch? Like decided to start the mission impossible films with fallout? He was spectacular & really freaky & evil & yea he freaked me out quite a bit with that ever changing by the same mask.
He wasnt the scariest person in the film tho. The kids dad with his domestic & alcoholic abuse which you actually see him do to the kids & how they are controlled by him & why they have issues. Oh that was not nice to see, but it does happen, so as much as i didnt enjoy watching that, it was needed because that does happen in the world & you cant just turn away from it.
So i was convinced like so many horror films he was gonna use one particular item that they really cared about to get the revenge & escape at the end, so i was pleasantly surprised that it wasnt that item. The kid did use everything he had learnt across the entire 90min run time to get out & there was a oh no moment near the end too. But nah well done film for actually having someone learn some stuff in a horror film. Good on you.
The score was pretty chilling & ghastly at points, but it so worked. it really really did work.
The guy with the notice board hahahaahha he was basically the meme. IT was brilliant.
Im not a woman of god or faith (unless its what i believe in which isnt much) so the Jesus asking bits were a bit much & bit yea ok we get this now. Also was she the only person preying for those kids, no one else could see that at all.
The 70s 80s setting for horror is very much jumping on the stranger things bandwagon isnt it, especially with kids involved in it all.
It was really cleverly done & i was out of breath & on a high when it was over. Its one i will recommend to the right people, but i dont think it will effect me in the same way as get out & midsommar have & stay with me. It is well worth a watch if horror is your thing. really very dark.
