Happy Easter… Although if im honest when my alarm went off this morning for me to go to the cinema i was like for fuck sake. My week at work had been so so busy. I was like do i need this. But no… much like on wednesday i was like Cinema makes you happy go see this film. So i got up & headed into town to see Sinners at 10:30 am. I know im crazy.
For a 10:30 showing it was 60% sold, which i am very impressed with. Every age group was represented too. Im very happy. Word of mouth has got out.
Trailers, the brand new mission impossible one (i got goosebumps), Thunderbolts, The Accountant 2, Final destination & the brand new 28 years later trailer which i hadnt seen yet… get me to the cinema for that.
& then the film started… believe the fucking hype.
So this is more than a vampire film (its in the trailers & both Michael & Ryan have said this so its not spoilers). It leads into the lore a lot at times, but its just so much more than that. Its about history & culture & stories & belonging & what feels right.
Michael B Jordan was phenomenal as Smoke & Stack. I know weve seen actors play two characters at the same time in the same film multiple times, but there was a moment with a cigarette early on that was just so seamless. Im going to have to slow that down frame by frame at points, cos it just works so well. I never ever felt confused about which one was which either, both had their own style & vibe & it was so cool & clever.
Everyone else in the film brought their best form to the film too. I guess they knew it was going to be something good & cool, but i dont think they realised quiet how good it was going to be, cos its bloody magical & stunning.
The way that music is used through the film, adds tension but also set the story. & im not just talking about the score. Im talking about the music played in that club & that one scene… holy fuck. It gave me goosebumps watching all of that & the feel of it. I often sit here & say going to the cinema isnt just for the big screen its also for the sound of it. This is one of those where you need to hear every little tin noise, every beat of the drum. Its marvellous & it needs to be up for Oscars for sound come next spring.
This is also such an amazing history lesson about America & the culture for this period of time & what power got you & what being poor was & how it all links together. It shows class & status & how it effects everyone. Its so brilliant & brutal as well.
God it got sexy & hot when it had to, but in real life yea someone would have done that. It never felt like it was just thrown in there to shock. It was all organic & needed & just felt so right. It also showed how complicated love & lust can be sometimes.
The vampires went for it. It got full on grim at points, especially in act 3. It just went for it & was all out war & no one was safe & the vampire tests were very clever & the fights & how it all went down was so good.
Also before the film i thought this was spanning a long time but this all happens in one day, bloody hell thats mental.
There is not just a mid credit scene but there is an end credit scene too. Both very very important & you need to stay for. I actually got up after the first went to the facilities & then came back in for the end one.
There were a few scenes that were all done in one take or were clever edited to make it look like it was all done in one go. It wasnt faking it like sometimes Mendes does, okay yes they all are much shorter but they are still very cool.
There was a lot of exposition about all sorts of stuff in this film but it never felt like we were being talked at, we got to know what we needed to know at the right point. It just flowed & was often done by the two of thems different points of views on the world too.
I dont want this to franchise out but i also really want it too. I have so many questions about the past for so many characters before the film happens & also then how the mid credit scene is effected with some characters it was all so good. I have to know so much stuff but i also want it to just live in my head, i need the answers but if they arent whats in my mind id be disappointed.
When it got jumpy, it went for it. Adding the thriller & violence to make you want to jump & turn your head.
It was such a clever story which felt so self contained but if things went certain ways could effect so many people. Crazy how a couple of peoples actions can have such huge changes on a town & the people in its lives.
I wish i had seen this in imax… yea that sound would have been so good. I did see it on the biggest brighton screen but still ahhhh it was such a moment to be apart of & well worth the early wake up.
Weve been a little lacking in buzzer contenders this year, but now we have another one. This film i hope is not forgotten & is being talked about in the 2026 awards season, because fuck me it deserves it for every reason. Its going to be a film i go back & watch again & again.
