i tried to get tickets for this in london & failed so badly. So when i saw this was going to be in the cinema i was like yes please, i need ot see this so here i am at 7:30 at my cineworld ready to watch almost 3 hours of the Scottish play live recording.
Time to play your favourite game… how many people were in the screening with me in screen 6…
….
….
If you guessed 8 congratulations, but it was nice as everyone just watched & listened.
No adverts, just trailers, for Fall Guy, for the NTA Season, for the musicals & then the new unlimited advert. All of these took up 10mins. So glad i turned up on time.
& then the play/film started… I wish id been lucky enough to get tickets to this.
Okay maybe being in a cinema with not many people in added to the intensity of it all but you could hear a pin drop both in the room & on the screen.
DAVE FRICKEN COACHES!!! The actor who plays him in Gavin & Stacey had a huge role in act 1 & i was just like yesssssss. Woohoo. Love it when people like that are in stuff.
Finnes & Varma were phenomenal. I mean i wasnt expecting that they wouldnt be but damn it was goosebumps & hairs standing to attention at times. So electric & so good. Sent chills all over my body. Damn they owned it.
I love how it was done in a modern setting & the staging was incredible. It worked as a new setting but it was still unapologetically Macbeth. If Bill had seen that, hed be proud that we are still performing his work & how his story works even today. It was so well done.
When she screamed, i had Oberyn flashback. That scream of hers now its iconic. It so good.
The witches, oooh they were dark & scary & i bloody loved them. The whole play did go properly dark too, especially with the family murders, yea that was not nice to see, but was how it was written. You were compelled to watch but you didnt really want to knowing it would be harrowing.
Is this a dagger i see… I mean i dont think anyone has written a better piece than that ever. When he started we all had a little gasp.
Whats weird with these kind of recordings, is they give you a 15minute interval. I didnt need it. ITs not like it was live happening there & then it was pre recorded last autumn & this was the first time it was shown so that was very weird to sit there for 15minutes to wait for it to start again. & then also at the end when they came out & took their bow & everyone on the screen in the audience stood up & applauded. That felt weird too.
Theres not much else to say other than that if im honest. If you know Macbeth you know how this goes & if you dont, then i feel sorry for you having never studied or read this play before.
My own rules in theory prevent this from being a golden buzzer contender, however i may have to break my own rules to allow this to be up there, because its been a long time since i came out with that sort of feeling from the cinema. It was mesmerising in the best way possible. Really wish i had seen this live.
