if you smelllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll what the rock is cooking? Hmm well this was on my original list of 31 films to watch this year & since then the trailers have come out & my hopes have been dashed slightly… but you know its the Rock & Naomi Harris, it cant be that bad can it?

Tonight also meant a trip to the Dome to see this. Odeon have either been playing this at 4:15 or 7:15 both bad times for me, so its worth taking a £3 hit to see it. & i remembered my glasses too.

Problem with a £3 Dome film in the little screen upstairs is everyone’s in there & there was some one in my seat! yea not happy about that a couple were in my seat, & i did actually say to them could you move & they said they were in the right seats & maybe i should check my ticket which i then showed them. I didnt make that much of a scene but the cinema guy then did actually come in  ask too see all 3 of there tickets & told them they were sitting in the wrong place entirely. HA! Serves them right.

Being the Dome they only have trailers for the up & coming big films, so it was Avengers, Deadpool, Solo & Jurrasic World (im still not seeing the dinosaurs sorry its not my thing.) The new Deadpool one gets funnier every time i see it though. I’ve got to play catch up on this over the weekend for sure.

& then the film started… & oh it was so close to being so much more than it actually was a real shame.

For 70 minutes it was being so much more than what it became. We had heart & soul in a popcorn film, i didnt know who to trust i didnt know other main actors were going to get killed off, i thought people who didnt die were going to… & then we got a 25minute monster film where all they do is destroy a city & throw shit about. I knew we were going to get some of that i wasnt that oblivious to it but oh god it was bad. The last 10 minutes gave it a little redemption but nah that city destruction nope no thankyou.

The Rock is now bankable cinema popcorn magic, he knows his role in films & he rocks it, absolutely rocks it (pun defiantly intended). You know what you get with him & he just delivers. Naomi Harris too was really good really really good. Shes never shit in her films shes a really good character, especially with her web of lies & that shes in charge of the exposition basically.

Joe Manganiello was good very good, however on everything i have seen hes the third name being mentioned with this film like hes the protagonist, but hes literally in it for 5 minutes & thats to serve a purpose. Yes it was nice to see him in a different role & he did deserve that outcome, but dont build up his character like that & then get rid of it straight away he should have at least made it to the final show down, before getting his out come even if it is at the start of the show down.

The guy from the walking dead had more screen time than Joe for crying out loud, & you know his character was only really good at being called an arsehole or being called an arsehole although his building escape is cool.

Oh & his bit on the plane. I liked the plane bit it was very good. Predictable but still well shot & genuinely thought a lot less people were going to get out of that then they did. So that was the stand out monster bit of craziness. More of that please Hollywood, surprise us from time to time with bits of that.

The gorilla had the best one liners & comic timing, considering he didnt actually say a damn thing, he wall brilliant. I was good motion capture too. The Rock too nailed his he properly shut people down. There was one point i was waiting for him to interrupt someone & go its doesnt matter what you think. I think i would have leaped out of my seat & screamed yes if that was the case.

Some properly dark deaths in the film, which are horrific,both in space & on earth, but some really funny ones too especially the brother. He deserved it.

It a proper shame about the just generic monster part of the film for the final showdown. It could have been so much  better than just that. A good attempt though at trying to make it better than it actually was. Good try Hollywood you will get there. & of course when the people champion is in the film, it automatically makes your film better.

In the end though it is just another monster destruction film, lets not beat around the bush.
