If Daniel Craig is going to win an Oscar for this as everyone keeps saying at the moment, i need to watch this. Also i am going to the cinema in the best place in the world to see this kind of film. I mean it is my normal cinema but you know what i mean. We all are or are huge allies, its just who we all are. Lets see the masterpiece which is Queer.
Traffic meant i had a few issues getting to the cinema, but when i did get there the trailers were already going, so i didnt get a proper look at how full it was. But id say from what i could see from the other people arriving at the same time as me millennials & Gen X.
The Trailers is did see, Better man, We live in Time (Still weird to see a trailer for something youve seen) The Brutalist, & SNL. There was one finishing as i walked in but i didnt really see it.
& then the film started… We need to talk about this film & the over the top hype for it…
The second they get to the Jungle, the film loses its way & the last 40minutes of the movie belonged to a different film entirely. It ruined it for me. Up to that point it had been alright, but no. That was too much & too out there & not what the film had been about. Yes it had been about self discovery & acceptance, but we didnt need to go to that level of it. 6 people left my screening during the last act of the film & didnt come back. Clearly they were pissed off with it too. I was then hoping for something cathartic & lovely at the end but even then it felt a little too forced.
Daniel Craig is good in this film. Just Good. Nothing exceptional. Also no one else is decent or on the same level as him (& Jason is only in it for like 3 scenes to tell us information that Craig needs to know). So its easy to seem exceptional in a film, when everyone else isnt giving it the same level as you.
There was a lot of sex, an awful lot of sex. There were two scenes that were really hot, & were like okay this i feel awkward like im watching something very personal here just spying on them. But he was essentially just grooming them to be his & pestering people for sex (it was even mentioned by someone early on) or that he paid & bribed them for it. I get the pleasure but still. He wanted them but they were all disposable. They were nothing until the very end, expect for being a quick fuck. We see a lot of Cock & Arse too. Maybe not one to take your parents to see.
There was a lot of substance, drug & drink abuse in this film too. Which therefore means a lack of coherent consent, which is not so good & not so glamorous.
This was set in the 50s right? It had that style to it, but i dont think it ever said it. Everyone was very liberal & out there until they needed to be prudish which got on my nerves a little. Either go for it or not. You cant be both in the same scene.
That woman in the bar was never truly explained who she was or what she did, she was just there to play games & be a cock block for parts of the film.
The style & the way it was shot was gorgeous, including when it went out there. It knew what it wanted to show us for sure. It wanted you to feel immersed in this era & live it, which you did feel. It had a hazy romanticised Aura to it for sure.
This should be the buzz film for award season, one to get people talking, but the way it dramatically fell off a cliff & plummeted, i dont even want to think about it again. It they read Craigs name out of that envelope come 2nd March i will be very angry at the academy for sure.
This was an okay movie until it became complete crap & a waste of time. It just makes it ehhh & nothing special.
