I have booked some annual leave off. Yes i have. I deserve it. I really do. & what a better way to spend a friday that watching Oppenheimer for the second time, three weeks after opening day but this time in Imax.
Now i have a confession to make… This is the first film i have ever, ever seen in IMAX. My sister actually when i told her that screamed at me through txt msg going WTAF! call yourself a film fan. She was texting me this while on her way to this cinema to see Oppenheimer in Imax 12h before i was going (she hadnt seen the film yet at all).
My Cineworld doesnt have an IMAX. We have screen X the 270 viewer, which is super cool. There is no IMAX screen at my odeon either & none of our independents have one either, so thats driving to either Crawley or Chichester to watch a film in IMAX. It costs more to upgrade your ticket & its also extra fuel & time, so i just havent done it but today, well today i had no excuse. It was the 11:10 showing, so there was no reason for me not to go.
So cinema god whoever you are… why are you doing everything in your power to stop me from seeing this film.
First you move the time of my original screening on opening day.
Then people arrive late meaning you miss the exposition.
Then its hard to view for a 2nd watching.
Then you wont let me book it online so i have to go in person.
Then you put a car accident on my hours drive to get to the cinema.
Like its like the almighty power is like nope, popcorn for one shall not see this film, its not allowed, stop Emile. But i got there. Also i get that i have to pay more to see a film at Imax but just because the cinema was a different category to mine, where my card is registered too, means that i have to go get the ticket in person. Puts you off going to see IMAX a bit along with the extra drive (but woohoo for there still being free parking).
So i went in paid (someone complimented my Mando Bag) found the IMAX screen &… Well FUCK ME SIDEWAYS!!!
There is nothing wrong with my cinema at all at the marina, nothing, but damn. Seats up to Row R. They didnt recline but they were like console gamer chairs. Lots & lots of leg room. & the size of that screen…Fuck a duck! Its insane. Stupidly insane. I am never going to get over it. Cinema trips will never be the same again with that noise & feel & view. Its was unbelievable.
I have no idea how many people were in the screening with me, mainly because by the time i got there i was so in awe of everything & the size that i just sat down just before the trailers & sorted out my cuppa tea.
Trailers… DUNE 2(i need to convince my dad to come with me to see this in IMAX I need to do that how can i do that & convince him its worth him spending £20.00 on? help) Killers of the flower moon (yes) The next Sir Ken Poirot of his set which looks cool & dark & ooooh what was the 4th trailer there was on for something big hand on… nope cant think of what it was. I know it was on after Dune & i was too busy sitting there going omfg at that.
& then the film started… its still spectacular
This is actually going to be a short review because i said all i had to say here first time around, but i wanted to pick up on a few things.
So my sister knows im a Nolan devotee & i was interested in her feedback. She says its her least favourite Nolan film. But she still said its a really good movie.
But she said it felt badly paced & then rushed.
One second watch of it with that fresh in my mind from her messages last night, i took that into consideration.
I think its intentional. When its rushed its when Oppenheimer is stressed & cant control whats happening. Up to that point it had all been calm & at his pace, but suddenly act 3 is taken out of his hand entirely & everyone is against him. & his anxiety & brain would have been going at 200mph, but then after its all done it slows down again because he is calm & accepts his fate. The pacing was right.
I knew the lack of score & then that noise was coming & i still leapt out of my chair. Oh my i leapt. It was good first time as a surprise but knowing it this time, damn i felt it go through me. That was worth the extra £6 alone.
Bloody ripples & rain all the way through, clever bastard you are Nolan. I hate you so much but i also worship the ground you walk on.
See told you little else to say because i spewed my love first time around. I really really did.
It is still Golden Buzzer worthy. It didnt quite hit it because i know what is still to come but its going to have to be something very very very exceptional to beat this, it really is.
