why do i have so many in draft at the moment, advanced previews, yes that is why, & i am going to try & type when im not at the cinema at all. Out of all the advanced previews ive been to recently this is the one people have said oooh let me know what you think, so this will be interesting to pass on to you all.
Pretty packed out if im honest, especially as this is actually out in the cinemas on wednesday, we obviously all wanted to see it well before hehe. A good mix of millennials & gen x too. Not many people older than that.
Trailers, The book of clarence, monkey man, ordinary angels & challengers ( i see you again cineworld with your advance preview set of movies) & also Back to Black too (ooooh maybe we are getting that too)
& then the film started… As someone from the Jordan Peele school of teacups i appreciate this film.
As someone who adores Get Out, i have learnt over the last decade not to trust anyone with a teacup & spoon & this film once again proved my instincts correct, because the second this character turned up with one i was like yea i dont trust them they are bad evil & selfish they can do one. & guess what by the end of the film i was right, just didnt know they would go that far with it. It got very overly dramatic.
Jessica Chastain was so incredible in this. Anne Hathaway is good too, & usually i would be singing as to how good, but compared to Jessica, its not even close. Its one of those performances that will stay with her for a long time. It was so captivating. Her love & he fear. I was gripped & i grasped my mug of tea quite a bit watching this in the cinema, all because of her. There was a point where i didnt believe Anne character would do something.
The casting of the kids was spot on for looks to the parents, but both ladies husbands were not strong enough actors to carry it off. Im not asking for Hanks, Ruffalo, Isaac or anyone like that as their husbands ot distract you from these two strong female leads, but there are plenty of other lower down the list male actors who i think would be better than these two. It just felt a little miss judged, especially with Jessica’s, could have made him a house hold name with a stronger person to play off at points.
The script was well written & the whole 1950 60s setting was lush, from the houses, to the clothes & cars & the dinner parties. I loved them they were so weird but so good. It just had the correct aura for the era it was portraying & i felt comfortable there. But because of the way the story was told & the aspect of not knowing what was going to happen next, i was on the edge of my seat in constant suspense. Thats good writing & setting for you. & some of the moments of despair actually made several other people in the screening with me gasp a bit.
Are boilers really that easy to dislodge. I mean seriously? I guess not so much now unless you are Jason Bourne (we will get to his watch along soon peoples) but there was minimum effort in that. Yea you wouldnt get away with all of that today. Also no one even contemplated why that happened & how some people were okay.
Also of course they kept all their meds in the basement & that their houses mirrored each other that much. Also how did it take that long for it to all be worked out.
The score was very eery & was chilling at points. It really did set the mood. It was very high pitch at points & i was like my ears cant cope with this.
Im glad mental health was brought up in this. Its still ignored today a bit (we have come a long way since i know) but it was nice to see someone talking about it in this decade & how they were first like no im okay & then begged for help. But then to be proved right at the end & that it wasnt just irrational, when no one listened to her, proved a point.
I also love that we never really see the moments of death, you see just before & the after math (except one which was grim) but the others were cleverly dealt with.
This isnt a Peele, its not, but for the now until we get his fourth film hopefully at christmas this will defiantly do & it got me going. IT was intense & acted by its leads so well. Its well worth your time for it to play on your minds people.
