nope your eyes are not deceiving you
there is a new mean girl, which is a cinema version of the Broadway musical of the original film. Also its set in the now & not the 00s so yeah this could be potentially amazing or just be a waste of time. Im not a die hard original Mean Girls fan but i do like it & wear pink if i can on wednesday & celebrate October 3rd so i have some hope for this.
My 11am showing was interesting for sure. A couple of groups of teen girls & a couple of familys but id say that was about that if im honest. Where were my fellow millennials.
Trailers, Madam Webb (probably) Iron Claw (yes) & i cant remember what the other two were unfortunately but there was 4 my bad.
& then the film started…. Yea… hmmm… it was alright.
Im not sure the songs enhanced the story if im honest. I mean it made me pay more attention to Regina more. Her intro song & villain songs were the best two songs in the film. But all of the rest of them were just crafted into it & it was like okay yes were adding a little bit more to the story but not as much as we would do if the story just moved on.
& im also not sure the direct copy was the right thing to do. I mean i get it, but the original has such an iconic cult status that it just felt lazy. Even when they tried to make it more 20s more than 00s it was like hang on nah thats not right. I mean i get that John Hamm wasnt going to have sex with the underage students, but then why the hell was he in the film. IT was a wasted opportunity to have him in it & it not be funny. He could have done something else fun.
It called Juno an old classic movie. When i left my cinema & messaged my sister who adores Juno & loves the original Mean Girls more than me & she was livid. How dare they call it old & classic.
We still got a few things from the original that were well done, fetch, the book, the pink, October 3rd, Glen Coco, but the buses… that was a major downgrade how that happened compared to the first. Its such a pivotal point in the original & yes i know thats hard to do on Broadway but nah it needed to hear the argument not be apart of a background of another song.
Jingle bell rock wasnt as fun however the guy in the background shouting thank you next, while that show was going on was good. I laughed at that.
If your a plastic, you need to be iconic & the other two were just relegated to just bellow supporting at points. They needed to do more. It felt a waste, im sorry it just did. The point is they are a clan & they work because its the 3, & then 4. Yes she is the leader but no we needed more.
I know its in to remake films, but i felt with a few scenes that i was then just waiting for the next one more There have been a few remakes where ive sat there & been like oooh im gripped but here i was like okay so the next scene is the gym scene, can we get to that please.
The cameo was needed & i did go yes because they had to be in it, but it felt a little forced as well. I know it gave them more screen time for that one scene but it was just a little like, a different role would have been better. & it was all for one joke too.
It was too self aware it was a direct remake & not set in the 00s & was a film. I mean it even at one point went no lets keep it PG13 or hang on no one dies in this. It was like no film. You have not earnt the right to do this. Your not being cool enough to do it. Please stop it.
So i may not be a die hard original fan, but its made me like the first more. IT just was okay & average. I recon come the end of the year this will be a film i forgot i went to see, which is a real shame. IT should have gone much harder but was just eh?
To the mean girls remake… thank you.. NEXT!
